OK, so I have been burning with nero, and my dvds wont work in any standalones. I just read the ifoedit burning guide and realized that 'juliet' is not supposed to be check. Would this be a big enough issue that it could be causing my problems?

Also, would choosing iso lvl 2 cause any problems (I havent but want to know if it would) that way I could put the full label of the dvd on. MONTY_PYTHON_AND_THEHOLY_GRAIL (bit over the iso 1 limit)

-Do they read in a DVD-Rom or your burner?
-Compatibility is also restrained depending on your media (dvdr blanks your using - cheap media sometimes will not work), and the program your burning it with.
-As well burnable media, such as DVD-R and that only have a 85% compatibility with all standalone dvd players. So you maybe one of the few who have a player that just don't accept your recordings.

If your ripping/editing all the stuff with IFOedit, and using ISO image in Nero, next instead try clicking DVD Video instead of ISO, and add all the files into the Video_TS folder and then burn. If you have no idea what I'm talking about go here for a very simply video tutorial (Doom9 is still best resource - but can somtimes get very complicated for people who are new at this):

Video Tutorial (http://www.dvdrinfo.com/tutorials/video/video2.avi)

Thats a very quick and simple guide on how you should be ripping/editing/burning. I just used this method now, and it works fine on all of my standalones. But then again, reflect on my above comments on why it might not work for you.

...and you can also give ImgTool 0.99.5 a chance. It uses the Nero API to burn a DVD. You don't need to set Joliet or ISO level. Try it and maybe it will work for you...

Nero works just fine in the recent versions as long as the projecttype is really set to DVD-Video. All the media which I burned were made with the default settings of Iso Level 1, ISO 9660 and Joliet enabled. They play on a Pioneer 343, a Yamakawa 780, a Sony xxx-300 (don't remember the letters) and another old Pioneer 909 (LD and DVD).

I suppose that the generated IFOs do not contain valid data.

make sure to "get vts sectors" using ifoedit. i recorded one dvd-5 yesterday and didn't do that, and it didn't work.
i use nero and i always record a DVD UDF project with al default settings. as for the label... if you don't really care you can use any name, as i tried and it works!!!

My dvds do not read in the burner or DVD rom. I can put them in and see the contents but if I try to play them they crash both ifoedit and windvd.

the media is khypermedia, so its nothing special

Im trying it in my xbox, which is supposed to read dvd-r(w)

I have tried using the DVD-video setting in Nero and draging my contenst to the VIDEO_TS folder. Same result.

I cant get ImgTools to create an image. I always get an error msg when I try to use it.

What the hell is Joliet anyway? THe guides say to disable it. Ive tried both neither seem to work.

I burned an image to my HD using Nero. The image played wonderfully using Deamon Tools.

I did do a Get VTS Sectors, but it didnt make any changes (as I expected it wouldnt need to since I didnt rip anything)

My second disk I tried I changed the first play to start with the movie. Now it crashes windvd as soon as it tries to play. My other one I tried started with the menu. The disk would go to the menu but as soon as I hit play WinDVD would crash.

You make it quite clear that the .ifos are damaged by wrong handling with ifoedit. It seems that you have performed operations with ifoedit which resulted in damage to the underlying structure.

I suggest that you start with simple projects and follow doom9's guides; make your first tests with DVD-/+RWs. If you succeed, you will learn a lot from successful attempts and can start more complicated tasks afterwards.

However, just changing settings in the burning software will not help at all if the .ifos and .vobs are inconsistent.

does this explain why the movie plays fine from the HD with both ifoedit and windvd? I can even create an image with nero and the image plays fine with either program when mounted with deamon tools. I think the ifo file is fine (though I could be wrong)

Softwareplayers are usually quite forgiving, and an emulation is still not the real thing.

You did not describe the way you authored the DVD, and therefore, this part is guilty until proven otherwise ;-)

Anyway, you could try imgtool 0.95 as suggested by coujo. It makes all the required settings. If your files do not work with imgtool, it's probably back to the authoring.

just tried the dvds in a sony. They play but the video freezes and gets very pixelated, so Im pretty convinced its the media (khypermedia) that is the problem, though someone else told me thier xbox reads the media.

The only changes I made to the dvd where to remove users restriction, make it region free, delete the playback of the columbia/tristar and FBI warning, and have the dvd start with the movie.

This all works as it should in the sony (with the exception of the video quality) so like I said, im now convinced its the media.

try writing to a dvd+rw if it works then it's a media issue. if not.... back to authoring like some1 said!!!

here's what i do...
every time i try a different thing (copy a dvd-5, then stripping a dvd-9, and finally transcoding a dvd-9) I ALWAYS use my DVD+RW.
it can be read in my standalone, and it can be recorded at 2.4x so the "testing" doesn't take that long!!!

you should really try that!

I would bet that you have bad media as well. I bought some Khypermedia in a 10 pack and 4 of them were crap....I know since I was trying to burn what had worked on a test run with a rw disc. I just use nero in udf/iso mode (all settings at default, except the label) and just drag the VIDEO_TS folder in and burn it. I'm using a Pioneer 105 BTW.

Hi bww42000
do you also drag an empty AUDIO_TS folder over as well?
I thought DVD needed one even though it was empty...

It seems that a lot of users in this forum neglect the DVD-Video project type in Nero and use the normal UDF-fileproject instead.

Chosing DVD-Video creates the correct folders, sorts the files in the right order and will even do basic checks for the correct files, though from 5.5.9.14 on you can burn even if Nero complains about invalid files, so you get all the help the program can supply, but have all possibilities as well.
