disabling a (56k) modem

yeah, that's right, i want to know how to disable my modem from being able to connect to the net; why? you might ask, last week my father got (kind of)interest in the net(e-mail), right now that's all he knowns, just wait until he discover what's out there.

most of you would say teach him about computers; and i could care less, cause i don't really like him, everyday he spends 2-4 hours just on reading/writing email (very, very slowing [one-finger typing]).

he can't turn off a computer/montior, close a webpage (there's usually about 20 pages open), or even disconnect from the net (1 phoneline).

ok, now your wondering what's the point; eventually my computer will just break down due the fact that he opened too many webpages, still be connected the net if no one is home to shut it off (as always), or even an important call comes in.

so, is there anyway to disable/enable my modem from connecting to the net, so he will just think that there's something wrong with the computer?

not leaving the password on and unpluging the phoneline will not help.

Ha, sounds like my dad (although I did show him some stuff and I don't hate him)..spending all night on the net. Lucky for me, he just went out and bought his own super expensive laptop, which I wish I could have. :)

Anyways, just disable the modem in device manager when you are gone.

If he's as computer illiterate as you say, delete the shortcut for your internet connection you probably have on your desktop. You can then retrieve it out of recycling bin when you need it.

EDIT: The worst that can happen from having to many webpages open is the internet explore gets dumped out of memory. Or if you have 98, you get a core dump and reboot. The comp being left on 24/7 just means that its life span will be decreased to the point where it is still partially usefull as a type writer as opposed to completely useless when it dies.:D

i'm already doing what cjv suggested; i already try deleting all the shortcuts, but its just wastes a little more time doing all that, and it doesn't keep my dad from clicking every other program.

i rather have him think the modem's broken, than to have him ask me where the internet is; now, if only he can figure out the computer switch on the -thing that has all switches on it- turns off the computer.

"still partially usefull as a type writer," that i would believe; my 1st computer (100mhz, but it's gone now) is faster than my friends' 366mhz, why? because it didn't take 12 sec for me to open windows explorer; "leaving my computer on all the time, doesn't cause my computer to lag," yeah right.
