Help... Extreme amounts of video problems on this PC

Ok, when I first built and installed XP on this system, I installed the Nimo Codec pack. Ever since then I have been having really strange and annoying probems with .avi files. They run perfectly fine in any video applicatoin, however there are some problems. If I try to view the properties with Exploerer or My Computer, not only does the Summary show nothing, but Explorer also promptly crashes. Further more, the program that is bundled with Divx just will not even open. I fear that these problems may be causing encoding issues as well, but I cant find a solid link between this and the encoding problems I've been experiencing. I have tried uninstalling Nimo and all divx related crap completely. Finally, I am aware that Nimo suggests to uninstall the Divx bundle before installing it, and I never installed Divx alone to begin with so thats not the problem. Someone out there must have experienced this problem at some point, please help, anyone who can.

first i have both divx 5.02 pro and nimo codec pack installed on WinXp SP1. they do not seem to cause any problems.

i think the problem is rather win Xp and explorer related. i have come to accept that win XP just doesn't like avis a lot. don't know why really but i also get rather frequent explorer crashes or at least lockups, because most of the time the explorer comes to life again a little later. Still it is really annoying and if i didn't have all those programs that would only work in windows i'd have swithced completely to linux a long time ago.

XP has bad habit that examines every file on what is pointed. By large AVI's it take lot of time, disk usage etc. But it shouldn't cause crashes. It's possible that it's hardware problem too, or bad setup - check is DMA on for hard drives, BIOS setup etc.

AVI examine can be turned off too, but I don't remember exactly how - use you search skills on WEB :-) .

Do you by chance have the "Sync" version of VirtualDub installed (ie: virtualdub_sync.exe). When I installed that version of virtualdub it caused almost identical problems.

...i've had the version that was included in gordian knot and have updated to the new PIV SSE2 optimized version recently... same problem though!

You may be having troubles from some of the spyware included in that codec pack. You can run adaware to get rid of it. It might break some of your codecs though -- see discussion on divx5 pro and Gator in the DivX guide...

Spyware (expecially poorly written spyware) can cause alot of weird stuff to happen.
