Hey all,
Im still getting used to backing up DVDs as there are so many variations on how things are arranged on the disc, but this is the first one so far that I don't know what to do on (that ive tried at least). Basically i want to rip the whole thing with extras. So i split to 2 dvds, and copy over the missing files that the movies says it uses when starting the film (including the menus, or so I thought). So good so far. I try disc 2 in the dvd player and it works fine, i go to the menu click play, and it starts fine.
Disc 1 is a different story. The menu files are in VTS_1, TTN_3. that part of the VTS_1 set must be at the end, as it got copied over to disc 2, but when i try to go to the menu in disc 1, i get the wonderful illegal navigation error. Am I going about this wrong? Can someone help? the title sets structure looks like this:
Title 1: VTS_01_*, TTN_1
Title 2: VTS_01_*, TTN_2
Title 3: VTS_01_*, TTN_3 <--- WHere the menu sits Im pretty sure
Title 4: VTS_02_*, TTN_1
Title 5: VTS_02_*, TTN_2
Title 6: VTS_02_*, TTN_3
Title 7: VTS_02_*, TTN_4
Title 8: VTS_03_*, TTN_1
Title 9: VTS_04_*, TTN_1
Title 10: VTS_04_*, TTN_2
Title 11: VTS_04_*, TTN_3
Title 12: VTS_04_*, TTN_4
VTS_02 and 04 are extras. VTS_3 is the FBI/Studio junk.
Can anyone help?

I did Reign of Fire a while ago. I wish I documented what I did for my split. It wasn't too hard I guess. At what point are you have illegal navigation? Are you trying to access your root menu during movie play? From first play? after movie stops and it supposed to return to root menu?

Update:
Just peeked into my ROF copy. In my first disk, I have chapters 1-8. I do my chapters splits points according to scene selections frames (1-4, 5-8, 9-11). That way, I can disable the other half accordingly. So if you selected chapters 9-11, you'll get the chapters 5-8 frame.
Anyway, I only have Video_ts.xxx, vts_01_0.vob to vts_01_4.vob, and vts_03_X.XXX on disk 1. My friend is watching my original RoF right now so I can't tell what is original or changed.
This is what I gathered:
In video_ts.ifo,
First Play PGC: Line 14 Pre Command or last command...(JumpSS_VMGM) Jump to VideoManager PGC 21.
PGC-Menu_21: First post command reads...(LinkPGCN) Link PGC 2.
PGC-Menu_2: Pre Command 10 or last command...(Jump_TT) Jump to Title 8.
In vts_03_0.ifo (vts_pgc_1): 1. Post Command reads (CallSS_VMGM) Call VideoManager PGC 16 resume cell 1. This will take you to VIDEO_TS.ifo/PGC-Menu 16, which will have a have a pre command,(Jump_TT) Jump to Title 3. This will take you to your main menu.
I hope you this helps you out.
Important note*** Whenever I do splits, I have error on burning the first disk in Nero so I always use Imgtool 0.94 with "Reallocate VIDEO_TS Structure" unchecked and burn. I can never stress the value of this utility.

Thanks for the help.
Basically I cant get to the menu on disc 1 at all, either from first play or by hitting the menu button. Its like the menu isnt even on the disc. In the Video_TS.ifo of the original, the menu is on program chain 3 of VTS_01 (title 3 of VTS_01). When I look at vts_01.ifo for disc 2, program chain 3 actually has content listed under it. But for disc 1, program chain 3 is listed, buts its totally emptyas far as content goes, which is why i think im getting the error. when it trys to go to the menu, it goes to program chain 3, but thats empty.
Any ideas? did you back it up with all the extras? dont suppose you could tell my what you did step by step? :)
Thanks again for all the help!

What error message are you getting? Are you getting the "can't find file" message or something to that effect? I'm not talking about the "illegal navigation" error.
Just a guess, did you copy the vts_1_0.vob over to your disk 1 folder? vts_1_0.vob contains all your menu stuff to your movie.

Hey, thanks again for the help.
Basically in disc 1 when i try to go to the menu in any way, I get the "Illegal Navigation" error. Basically when you play the original disc in IFOedits dvd player, and track where the disc goes when going to the menu, it says its going to Title 3. When you look in the IFOs to see where title 3 is, its in VTS_01, program chain 3.
So when you look at the original VTS_01_0.IFO, the program chains are broken out like this:
PGC_1 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 1]
[Ch 01]
[Ch 02]
[Ch 03]
[Ch 04]
[Ch 05]
[Ch 06]
[Ch 07]
[Ch 08]
[Ch 09]
[Ch 10]
[Ch 11]
[Ch 12]
PGC_2 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 2]
[Ch 01]
PGC_3 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 3] <--Where the menu is accessed
[Ch 01]
In my disc 2 -> VTS_01_0.IFO, its looks like this:
PGC_1 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 1]
[Ch 01]
[Ch 06]
[Ch 07]
[Ch 08]
[Ch 09]
[Ch 10]
[Ch 11]
[Ch 12]
PGC_2 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 2]
[Ch 01]
PGC_3 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 3]
[Ch 01]
Very much like the original, just missing the first chapters. My disc 1 VTS_01_0.IFO looks like this though:
PGC_1 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 1]
[Ch 01]
[Ch 02]
[Ch 03]
[Ch 04]
PGC_2 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 2]<--empty (no cells)
PGC_3 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 3]<--empty (no cells)
As you can see, the PGC_2 and PGC_3 are listed, but contain nothing and when you go to the menu, it tries to access PGC_3. So basically, how do I split it so that the PGC_2 and PGC_3 arent empty on disc 1?
Thanks

Hey 2COOL,
so i was messing around with the VTS_01_0.IFO for disc one and decided to edit PROGRAM CHAIN 3 under the VTS_PGCITI tab in the upper window of IFOEdit and one of the fist setting is how many programs - my ifo for disc 1 says 0, but disc 2 says 1. the next is how many cells - again my first disc says 0, the second says 1. SO i just edited those two settings to say 1 instead of 0 and when i try the first disc in ifoedits dvd player, it now works fine.
So now the next trick is to try burning it and try it on a regular set-top player and see how it goes :)

Ardend,
Did you try using with ifoedit 0.91?

Yeah i was thinking the same thing, so i tried it and its the same either way. Is there a way to split the dvd in 2, but tell it to transfer certain program chains to both discs?
Can you tell me what steps you might have taken to back yours up?
I used dvd decryptor to rip the files, then IFO .91/.94 (tried both)and split to two dvds. That gave me the VTS_01 sets and ifos which look like i posted above. I then copied from the original set of files the VIDEO_TS.XXX files and the VTS_03 (studio/fbi crap) and thats it.
i haven't edited any ifos or anything....
Disc 2 plays in the IFOEDIT dvd player, disc 1 stops with the illegal navigation error when it trys to switch to the title menu after the FBI/Studio junk. BUT i did notice the menu button works if I hit it before it tries to switch to the title menu. Is there a way to get the disc to jump to where the menu button links to, but do so in the same way as the menu button? meaining, obviously the menu button takes you to the menu files, but it must bypass somethings that are accessed when you let the disc play to the menu normally.
I must be missing one stupid thing since you were able to do it and you mentioned it wasn't too hard. arghh!!!
Thanks

Your problem with Reign of Fire may be related to the "bogus VOB ID" as drmih said in
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=39357&highlight=Minority+Report
Try it or ask help from drmih. Please post your further result.

Ardend,
If you are still here.
Once I met the same famous "Illegal Navigation Command" when trying to
completely backup the movies " Reign of Fire " and " Minority Report ". I figured out one crazy method and it works. The discs with that dammed error now plays until the film ends.
Just copy the ifo, bup from the DVD Decryptor-ripped-to folder (6~7 GB one) to the ifoedit-sliced-to folder (3~4 GB one), I mean only the one with that dammed playback error. Then, run ifoedit's "Get VTS sector".
