Yo. Question for you guys. Hmm... It deals with the dye used in pioneer DVD-Rs and the dye used in Ritek DVD-Rs. They are both the same color (and I know this may sound stupid) but it's logical. Because they are the same color, they probably use identical dye. And if the dye of a disc is the major factor in the storage life of the data on it, why does pioneer use a cheap dye such as what ritek uses?

Here is a link to what verbatim uses:

It's cheapo AZO dye which has a very short shelf/storage life. So... I guess I'm still stumped as to why pioneers are considered all that.

Dark purple Dye is reported with effectively pioneer & ritek as the best working DVD-R.
Ritek is cheap, not too much but clearly cheaper than pioneer.

This does not mean that doing a dark dye like tha tis the cheapest solution to produce DVD-R.
I am not specialist in DVD-R mass production, but I would bet it's the more expensive dye in fact. And that explain why other bulk dvdr with so many problems we all know do not use it.

Pioneer do quality, for an expensive price : Marketing strategy is : Secure, stable, reference brand.
Ritek do quality also, but with a different aim : Outsider, get marketshare, become leader on DVD-R so very agressive pricing.

You can't say much about a disc only if the dye color is identical.

I have worked some years in a CD factory. In this factory they also produce CD-R. Yes, I know, there is a difference between CD-R and DVD-R but one thing I really know. The color of the dye says not that much about the media. There are many ingredients of the dye which have no color and have much effect for the quality...
