Divx 6 - When??

Any word when Divx 6 will be out or even a new build?

Who knows. I know that they are working on a new version and apparently there is a new method of 2-pass that is supposed to be a lot faster. I also know that they have done the first beta test on it but that is it so far. It could be released very soon like in the next couple of weeks or in the next couple of months nobody knows except for the developers so I don't think you are going to get any straight answers here so lets not speculate. BTW the new version will be 5.1, I think.

BoNz1: Thanks for the info, I think this kind of information should be on Doom9 news page though as everyone is interested in hearing about the latest development of the codec we love ;)

but they might tell him news if he asked for it? I don't know but you would think they would want to promote there developments and build up "hype" etc....

well.. I don't exactly run a rumour site.
And I don't really have to ask them.. I'm an official beta tester but unless I get official clearance to talk about betas I'll keep info about new versions to myself.

Ok then rumours was a wrong word to use! It is just that news has been pretty slow lately and it would be nice for us people who return everyday to have updates about the Divx codec, don't you think??

If you are an official beta tester why not ask them if you (or anytone else) could do a "preview" I am sure they would mind if you posted info about how things are going etc...

I hope you don't take this the wrong way... like I am trying to say the site is no good or stuff like that! I really like Doom9.org and visit it everyday so Thanks :)

well.. of course it's nice to know about new things.. but you may recall the frenzy about divx5 prior to its release. People speculating all over the place, spreading unfounded rumours and asking for betas, etc etc. It's not a pretty sight and I do not wish to encourage that kind of discussion.

I do take your point about slow news though. With the holidays coming up I might just get around to do another codec test but I'd very much like to wait for a final DivX 5.1, XviD 1.0 and WMV9 in order not to have to run another test just weeks after.

BTW, one of my tests included a beta of DivX5 so beta status isn't a killer argument, but on the other hand suppose you find a serious flaw which gets corrected by the time the final version gets released... you'll have to redo the test and rewrite a lot of text - and with 4 large pages and a lot of 1on1 comparisons between the codec that's a huge amount of work.
