View Full Version : Last version of XviD no ISO compliant???

Hi,

I have a problem using last version of XviD, decoding the resulting ISO mp4 stream with an ISO MPEG-4 decoder (Envivio TV). Using previous versions (for example 21112002-1) I've no kind of problem.

A screenshoot and a little description of the problem is online here http://www.neowebsite.it/xvid/xvid2.htm

Any idea?

Hey,
One way I found works for me is to change the fourcc to "DIVX" and then use DivX5's MP4 creator to create my XviD MP4.
Nic's fourcc changer will do this for you.
I have done a few encodes like this without any problems.

Good luck.

Using DivX 5.02 pro mp4 creator simply crashes! This is the final part of the log (the first part is similar)

Anyway the problem should be another one, and another must be the answer.

Is it possible that nobody has the same problem? I think that if it will true that with last build XviD is no longer ISO compliant (at the moment I'm not able to play correctly the video using a well known ISO decoder, Envivio) it's a very bad thing......

Where are Koepi, Nic and other developers?

Please read carefully the threads before posting.

You have to know (and you could read the documentation attached with lastest koepi's builds) that the lastest unstable builds, (the development builds) could cause non mpeg4 compliant streams due to the current state.... UNSTABLE, DEVELOPMENT. There is many development behind this project and many changes in a daily basis.

This could cause some builds with problems.

Ok, I didn't read it, sorry.....

However I think that MPEG-4 interoperability is very important and that we should work to maintain it....

i can't agree more ;)

@FunMan:

What settings did you use that gave problems with Envivio?
I've encoded 10+ movies with both 03122002 and 09122002, and they play flawlessly in Envivio.

My typical settings would be along the lines of:
MPEG quant, DX50, CME, 3/100/150, B-VOP, 2-pass internal, no Qpel.

Ok, then next time, before complaining about an UNSTABLE DEVELOPER binary, read up the info!

Oh, you're already working on it? Nice, don't forget to send your results.

@cjv

At the moment I made few tests using fixed quant 2, croma motion, quarter pixel, b-frame (5/125/100) B-VOP. Perhaps the problem is qpel, I have to test it. Thanks.

@nesskiel

This is your opinion, I can respect it although I cannot share it. It's most probable that coming hardware player will be able to play ISO mp4 stream instead of "obsolete" Avi..... and I don't think this is only my impression.......... Mp4 is more powerful and flexible file format than Avi.......

@Koepi

Honestly before your reply to this post I had more esteem of you. Probably my poor english (I'm italian and my ability with english is not properly divine) has given place to misunderstandings but anyway this don't justify your arrogance.

The mine wanted to be an advice. This advice could be accepted or not, this isn't my problem, but I think that it's stupid to not consider what I think it's a good advice. I think MPEG-4 interoperabily is very important (in particular now that we could see and are easily avaible different opensource and commercial ISO MPEG-4 player), I hope I'm not the only one thinking it, although usually XviD users uses Avi.

Ok, then next time, before complaining about an UNSTABLE DEVELOPER binary, read up the info!

I was not in right, sure, but also 21112002-1 is an UNSTABLE DEVELOPER binary, as you said, and with this version I had no kind of problem at all. Because of this I posted the "problem"....

Oh, you're already working on it? Nice, don't forget to send your results.

I'd like to do it, but I modestly don't think to have the necessary knowledge in C programming and in MPEG-4 video standard. This means that what I can make in a month someone that better of me know XviD source and MPEG-4 video standard could make in 2 days.

However in future I will abstain proposing improvments, signaling bugs and simply sharing advice if this will be the thanks I'll receive for it.....

Without rancor,

Don't mistake my criticism, which I orientated on the sound of your post, with arrogance. Sure, XviD is an MPEg4 codec and as such should be MPEG4 compliant, but for some builds it's broken since we add new code which isn't debugged yet (hence development, unstable tree!).

Thanks for the report, but it sounds a bit like talking to a child when you write that we (which includes you if you write we) should stay mpeg4 compliant (once more, that's our goal here).

No need to be offended - it's just a little chit-chat and no real-life talk.

Using DivX5 mp4 creator with a xvid which is produced with "dx50-bvop compatibility" switched off is sure a bad idea as it'll crash the producer. (Thanks suxendrol for pointing that out!)
