View Full Version : XviD Decoding Problems....

Hey all, I new here, and i know zilch about codecs. That said, I've got a problem with a few XviD encoded films. The movie does actually play, but it plays strangely. Whenever a scene transfers, the old scene isn't cleared, so the colors and shapes of the old scene are overlayed on top of the new one. The end result is a VERY freaky effect. Weird thing is, this problem only happens on Win98, not WinXP. Also, the problem is only with certain movies. So far i've only seen it on the Powerpuff Girls Movie and Goldmember (i dunno if there's more than one out there, i'm just talking about the one copy everyone seems to have on WinMX ^.^; ) I've got the latest build of the Nimo pack, which I'm told has the latest version of XviD. I would download it seperately, but I have yet to find a working link. But that shouldn't be the problem right? Anyone know what I'm talking about/how to fix this?

Could be a badly encoded movie (especially if you downloaded it). Try playback with ffdshow, it will help with many problems.

Okay, and urm, how do I do this? :o *see first sentence in first post* I'm using Windows Media Player, and when i click File>Proporties>Advanced, i see "ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder" in the "Filters in Use" box. Sooooo do i already have it??? And as for the download thing, 1) I've downloaded 3 different copies and they all have the same problem. 2) It's the whole film, not just part of it, that's freaky looking. Any ideas?

Yes, that means you already have it. Does this happen with any other XVID encodes on your computer? If it does, this probably signifies a problem with Windows 98 since it's fine on XP.

Nimo Codec Pack is evil[tm] and known for causing such trouble.
Simply uninstalling Nimo doesn't help, you have to reinstall your system from scratch (format c: ).

Yes, quite evil. It's one of the most bloated packs I've seen. There's no way you'd ever need everything in that pack (which is why it's an all-you-ever-need pack... I guess  ) I don't see why the pack is so popular though, it's just a big bundle of filters, nothing special about it.

I had the same problem with Austin Powers 3 as described above. I simply uninstalled Nimo and that was fine -- it once even did occur that both Nimo and Xvid were installed and Austin Powers 3 worked well without any problems. so I guess, it extremely depends on whatever, probably how much crap piled up in your Windows system ;)
(format c: just because of a codec is something I'd like to avoid anyway...)
