I used my TV tuner card to cap. a video, and I'd like to convert it.

I recorded a TV brodcast that's ~80min and the file size was 3.37GB.
I have a LEADTEK WINFAST TV2000XP TV/FM TUNER and I used it's included software to record the video with the MPEG2 Optimal setting. However, the file is an .avi.

1. How can I find out what formats (video and audio) were used?
2. Can I convert this to a DivX with VBR MP3 like I do with DVD's all the time? I use gordian knott and the guide here to do my DivX 5 rips.

I didn't seem to be able to find a guide for this, but does anyone know how to do this?

I was unable to open the file in Nandub or Virtualdub. I get this error: MPEG import filter: pack synchronization error.

I believe that what you have is an mpeg-2 file that happens to have a name that ends with .avi -- this is because if you open an mpeg-2 file in Vdub you'll get a 'pack sync' error message. You can check to see if it's truly an .avi file, and what the codecs are, by using GSpot, which is available at Doom9's download page.

You can easily create DivX .avi files from MPEG-2 captures in Gknot, though there is no specific Guide. Here's the process I use:[list=1] Start DVD2AVI
Open my .mpg file(s). I must use all files (*.*), as .mpg is not one of the default input file types.
I set the channel format to "MPEG Audio" -- otherwise it won't demux my audio track
I set Field Operations to NONE. My capture software deinterlaces for me. If I'm capturing film content, I'll have to IVTC in Gknot.
I save the project (.d2v)
Start the BeSweet GUI
Select the .mpa file as input, and select an .mp3 file as output.
Open the .d2v in Gknot
Set the output AR to 4:3 (I capture at 720x480, which is 3:2)
When I get to the Audio 1 tab of the encoder job, I select the .mp3 and "just mux."[/list=1]I hope this helped!

hi, i have captured a lot with my good old pinnacle PCTVPro and could only say i prefer to use the Capture function from Virtual Dub with the Huffuy Codec or the Mjpeg Codec and then convert it to Xvid or Divx. its the best method i know! try it.

I've done that too, but prefer the MPEG-2 capture with my particular hardware. With Vdub, I have to use the BTWinCap drivers, and I don't care for the results from the VfW/WDM wrapper that I must use with Vdub capture.

You could always use the WDM capture functions of virtualvcr. I have weekly schedualed tasks that will auto run it and set it to capture a specific channel for a specific time and then shut down till needed again. I come home a few hours later and watch/compress the video. Works like a charm with the BTWincap drivers and no WDMtoVFW conversion or dropped frames. At 640x480 I can use my new HD to record 13~16 hours of NTSC video. ;) Virtualdub has good capture functions. But this is just to damn handy!!
