View Full Version : Ripped DivX Playback Problem

I have ripped DVD (Wing Commander). I had no problems with that. I used Gordian Knot and DivX 4.12 Codec.
The result of my work is very quality DivX (1200MB). I can Playback it, but only from the beggining. I CAN NOT (!!!) start playback from the middle (or somewhere else), I MUST playback it from the beggining.
If I try to play it from where I want (I set the cursor in BSplayer to (for example) the middle, I can`t see picture anymore.
The same problem I had even with DVDx, where I used DivX 5.02 Codec.
Can anyone tells me what should I do?

Hi and welcome to the forum-
Try and rightclick the BS Player box and then go Options-Preferences-Video-Check Use Overlay-Mode 2. Does that change anything?

Hello.
It didn`t change anything.
I think that there is a problem with picture. When I encoded vob file with Gordian Knot and Virtual Dub there were video and audio files seperated. Then I tryed to play those files. Audio file was perfect, there was no problem with it. But video file didn`t work, the same problem (which I have already described) appeared.
Have anyone else had this kind of problem?

Sounds like you don't have any key frames in your movie.
Without key frames the movie has no "starting point" except the very beginning of the movie.
So when you want start playback in the middle of your key-frame-less movie, your computer plays the movie from the beginning as fast as it can untill it is at the middle of the movie. You can imagine this can take a long while (depending on your computer speed).
If you got key frames (every 10 seconds for example) in your movie, it start searching from the nearest key frame (which can only be 10 seconds away from the place you want to be).
If you know what i mean

Good Point Slogra-
To find out if that's true in your case, SOL, open your movie in NanDub, then go File-File Information, and it'll tell you if you have Key-Frames and how many.

Thanks a lot,
you are right, I have only 4 key frames in my DivX file. Thank you, I realy didn`t know what to do.
By the way, has anyone already tried "DVDx" ripping program. I didn`t see many people who were talking about it, I am not sure if it is good or bad, I used it twice and it is not so bad.

Hi-
Re-encode the .avi, or re-encode from the DVD again. I never had much luck with the "Re-derive Keyframes" thing in VDub (maybe I was doing it wrong).

Thanks for very useful information.
But if I try to encode DVD again, where can I set keyframes. I tryed tutorial from doom9 page, (which is very good), but I didn` find any settings of this at all.

Hi-
Open up Virtual Dub and then go Video-Compression-DivX 5.02-Configure-General Parameters-Keyframes-Max Keyframe Interval. What does it say there? I figured you had been fooling with the settings to have come out with only 4 keyframes in the whole movie. Anyway, the default is 300.
In Doom9's DivX5 Guide (http://www.doom9.org/divx5-vdub.htm), there's mention of it and a picture, so you must have missed it. ;)
