View Full Version : DVD playback probs - Pioneer A05

Okay here's my problem:
I'm ripping a DVD-5 disk using DVD Decrypter 3.1.4. It rips the ISO fine. I then tested the ISO by using Daemon Tools to make a virtual drive and then used WinDVD to view it. It worked fine. I then burned the ISO to the DVD-RW disk that came with my Pioneer A05. The burn was successful but when I try to play the burned disk on my PC, WinDVD comes out prompting me for a region code change. Since both the original DVD and my drive are both set for region 1, this shouldn't be happening. Plus the ripped ISO didn't give this behaviour while it was on the HD.
So I'm wondering if you think that the burner could be the problem or could it be the media? I have a DVD-R disk that came with the unit but I'd hate to waste burning on it if the problem is the burner.
Here's some notes:
Pioneer A05 with 0.52 firmware
Pioneer 2x DVD-RW disk (the disk that came with the drive).
I tried burning at both 1x and 2x. Same result.
I bought the drive at Futureshop so if there's any thoughts that it might be the burner, I could easily exchange it for another unit.
Any insight you could provide would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Stephen

I doubt there are any problems with your burner, especially if your getting some type of result with the RW. I don't use the pioneer, but follow these steps and it should help determine if any problem exists. Since the DVD your ripping is a DVD 5, use Decrypter in the file mode and:
1: select all files and decrypt.
2: open IFO Edit and load th main movies IFO that was just ripped and 'get vts sectors (twice)' -close app.
3: re-open IFO Edit, load the IFO file again and click the 'region free' button. Save, and close app.
4: Your files should now be ready to burn or to create to image.
I don't use the latest version of Decrypter, but i think it has even progressed to the point where with DVD 5 you can basiclly copy the movie without going thru all the steps (ie setting the movie to region free, creating an image, etc., and i think it will even burn)

Yes, DVD Decrypter has the option to ISO read/write. This is what I did for the DVD-5 dvd that I tried.. I also tried a DVD-9 where I used IfoEdit to strip the main movie to fit on a 4.7GB disc. After stripping the stuff, I did get vts sectors and then used disc image in IfoEdit. The resulting image I then burned with RecordNow Max. The same result happened where it worked fine on the hard drive but when I burned it onto the DVD-RW disc, WinDVD prompted me for a region change even though one shouldn't have been required. It would continue prompting for a region change over and over even though it was correctly set to region 1.
Anyone seen this problem before?
If worse comes to worse, I'll return the A05 and exchange it for an A04.. Although it would be nice to get this guy working.. :D

It could be some form of RCE protection stuffing up your DVD-R/RW burn

I've read about other people doing these 2 discs fine so I doubt that's the problem. They are Changing Lanes (the DVD-9 I tried) and Tango & Cash (the DVD-5 I tried)..
I might just return it and get an A04.. I've read of some other people's horror stories with the A05 anyway so that might be the best bet.
Thanks,
Stephen

Well I moved my A05 to another computer. My other computer was running Win2K server. This new computer is running XP pro. Well strangely the burn worked fine in my new computer. It now plays fine in WinDVD and in 2 of my 3 standalones. The other standalone has blocks from time to time but I wasn't holding my breath on it anyway since it's a 1st gen.
Anyways I'm just glad it works. Just letting people know in case they have the same prob as me. :D :D
