Film (DVD) - TMPG - Interlace or non-interlace - that is the question

Hi!


What I have usually done is to run the film through dvd2avi and after that take the .d2v into Tmpgenc. The problem I have is, that I have always used "source: interlaced" & "encode into: interlace". I haven't noticed any difference in which fieldorder I have selected.

I have read in the forum, that some use non-interlace into non-interlace as well and with success. My question is, what should one start using? I have heard that if there would be special effects done in video in between of the film, then the non-interlace into non-interlace would result in artifacts and therefore the interlaced into interlaced is the safest option.

Could somebody with experiece let me know, what would be the best choice for these settings interlace/non-interlace and the field order.

Not an answer but a related question: about the source, can you control the interlace / non-interlace, I thought you were stuck with whatever the original stream is?

As far as I remember TmpgEnc allways reports a video stream as being interlaced, so the autodetec doesn't seem to be very good. Whether you encode as non- or interlaced probably doesn't matter as long as your source isn't truly interlaced. I can't remember any DVD movie (hollywood) to be interlaced. It's easy enough to see from f i the preview in TmpgEnc. And if you cant see it don't bother with the interlacing, since it takes longer and probably uses more bits.

DV on the other hand is most often interlaced and will be totally screwed if you don't encode it as such
