Best plugin for denoising source?

Hi,
Im ripping the ntsc dvd of clerks, at because of the 16mm grain on the film it is hard to compress.

TemporalSmoother(2,1)

gives me a decent 12% boost in compressibility (to 69%)where as Gknot's medium noise filter

SpatialSoftenMMX(1,4,6,false,false,4,4,6,8)
TemporalSmoother(2)

doubles that to 78. I'd like the extra compressibility but I think i'll loose a little too much detail with this option.

What external plugins do you recommend denoise without loosing much detail? I may give c3d a go...

TemporalSmoother() is a good choice.

You can increase the filter effect by (2,2) or (2),
and in very hard cases by (3).

Fast spatial filtering you can do in resize filters:
-> Bicubicresize() without b,c (equals b,c = 0.33,0.33)
-> BilinearResize()

SansGrip's FluxSmooth is very good. Just use the default settings and you should get good results. It's also a bit faster than Convolution3d.

What did you end up using? I'm doing this movie at the moment and I'm using conv3d at the predefined movieLQ setting, this increased compressability by 5% (but the picture looks much nicer).

BTW, those values are for two CDs, right?

I got my lowest comp. test values ever with this movie. 1 CD at resolution 640 x XXX gave me a value around 20%!

Now I'm using 2 CDs with resolution 512 x XXX and the extras... seems to give acceptable quality.

But it does feel weird using 2 CDs on a non-fullscreen movie that's only 90 minutes.


Oh, I also tried adding greyscale() to the avs-script. This actually decreased the comp. test value (though only by a ~0.01%).

I like vlad's Temporal Cleaner for the temporal part. In my eyes it produces a more pleasant/compressible output than the temporal routines of C3d.
Unfortunately there is stil only beta1 available and I suspect this filter hasn`t undergone low-level optimization yet, which I would love to see :D

Anyway, Vlad seems to have disappeared for some time now, so I would not expect anything like that to happen very soon

I'm sorry I haven't posted here since 2 weeks :(
But I'm very very busy :
I just bought a new house and I have a lot of work to do to have the sweetest house .... ;) .
And unfortunaltely my Xmas holidays were canceled due to a big problem with one of our project.

So between work at home and in front of my work desk, my free time is very limited.

But don't worry I continue to take time to read the forum (I read Sh0dan proposal). But don't have any time to program and I don't know when I'll got time as normal... :(

But I promess I'll continue to enhance C3D and TemporalCleaner ...

Used c3d with the LQ DVD preset, the results were great!Increased compressibility by about 20%, removing the noise actually looked better :) I've always retained the noise on my rips to remain true to the original as usually it's intentional. (blairwitch, pi) but it gives the rip a much cleaner look without it.

Ok. I don't see that big difference in compresabillity when using c3d (for 20% I think I'd almost have to go to the "bad vhs" preset), but no matter.

This was the first time I used c3d for a DVD-source. Normally I don't think it's necesary, but the noise in this is just ridiciluos.

It sure took some time. I had just started it when I wrote the previous post and finished it a couple of hours ago (I've been playing games while leaving VDub at idle and hibernated the computer during night). Speed was around 8 fps.
