ANY effective way to use IFO EDIT + TMPGenc ?

I'm trying to use TMPGenc to transcode the video stream, and remuxing it later with Ifo Edit. The problem is that the audio is always out of sync. I followed the Doom9's rules and i have always this sync issue (and i've seen that i'm far from being the only one around here...).
My question is: Is there any way to use another method or authoring program with TMPGEnc ? (I really like the image quality, which is the only thing bad about ReMpeg).

Please, help me out here, because my head is burning more than my DVD-R DRIVE !

Maybe I'm blind, but I've been unable to get decent results from Tmpegenc under any circumstances. I do however have good results with Rempeg2. I look at my DVDR's on a digital 36" TV and I've been impressed with rempeg results.

My results with Tmpegenc don't look as good. I suspect the source of results with Tmpg is the different parameters that just aren't well documented while Rempeg is pretty straight-forward.

I would reccomend staying away from TMPGENC in the interest of mental health.

I have yet to verify this (I'm in the process of transcoding now), but I've been told that IfioEdit 0.6 will do the remuxing of the m2v into the VOBs properly. So I am using IfoEdit 0.95 to prep the VOBs, TMPGEnc to transcode and once finished I'll use IfoEdit 0.6 to remux. I'll post results in this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39179) when I finish doing it.

EDIT: it did not work, still got audio out of synch

You are correct, I too have never gotten correct sync with audio when using tmpgenc. I always get perfect sync when using rempeg but as stated the video quality is not as good. My problem as well as may orhers is that the audio gradually goes out of sync. If anyone has had some luck please let us know.

I thought a saw a guide (maybe here, maybe VCDHelp.com) that uses DVD2SVCD for the mpeg reencoding for a DVD-5. That uses CCE. I heard it works perfectly.

VCDHELP.com is down right now, so I can't find the guide at the moment.

Let me know where you find the guide and how it worked after you try it. There is a cce guide on doom9 but I don't recall seeing one that includes using dvd2svcd.

The newer versions of IFOEDIT create a TMPEGENC template that leads to the problem you describe. They try to reproduce the GOP structure of the MPEG-2 video (which frames are I P B) analogous to the 'match source' option in ReMpeg. Trouble is that, unless you use the re-encoded MPEG-2 to author a new title in IFOEDIT, it won't work.
I bumped my head against this problem for a while until I discovered that (also reported by other people in these forums) IFOEDIT 0.88 produces a template file for TMPEGENC (only the I-frame location is written) that leads to a re-encoded MPEG-2 file which can be re-muxed with success. To be safe, I also use IFOEDIT 0.88 to re-mux
although this probably is not necessary.

That possible solution with IfoEdit 0.6 did not work for me (audio is out of synch), so I'm gonna try the method mentioned with 0.88. I mentioned this in the other thread, athough there is a link for ver. 0.88 it on the ifoedit website, it is dead. So if anyone has this version I would appreciate it if you could email it to me (user name = email address). Thanks

EDIT: I never followed up on this, I used Maestro instead and got good results (with NTSC title), for now, I'm only going to use IfoEdit for the striping.

Can you give us a quick rundown of your method?
Does it work with DVDs witj multiple PGC's too and if they're not 100% film?

I pretty much followed the TMPEGENC guide available here at doom9.
(see http://www.doom9.org/mpg/tmpg-dvdencoding.htm). I've never tried multiple PGCs and I have only re-encoded PAL movies so far. However, I don't see why it wouldn't work with NTSC (provided you 'force film' in DVD2AVI if necessary, and pick the suitable settings in TMPGENC). The problem with NTSC may be more a frame rate thing.

I may have posted a misleading answer to your problem because I didn't realize you were re-encoding NTSC movies. Out of sync audio may be caused by a framerate mismatch between the video and audio streams.
My problem with the IFOEDIT 0.95 TMPEGENC template lead to a screwy
movie playback after the first few minutes. Audio and video were out of sync also, but the video was playing too slow.

Use v0.88 to write I frames, TMPGEnc to encode and then v0.95 to remux and do everything else.

After i wrote this original post, i tried out something that worked out right in audio sync.
1. I used TMPGenc to encode the movie (without following the doom9 guides). I didn't use the create Template Button on IfoEdit. Instead, I've simply used the dvd2avi project and loaded it in TMPGenc.
2. Then, I've used VOBEdit to rip the subtitles and audio files*
3. I've followed the doom9's guide "DVD authoring in IFOEdit"

In the End, i got a perfectly audio/video sync in Moulin Rouge ( a 122 minutes movie) !

But (there's always a but...) now i have a problem with the subtitles:

They work out great until the middle of the movie, and around chapter 20 the movie stops playing, and i see the subtitles scrolling for a minute or so and then the movie goes on with the subtitles clearly out of sync (by an half an hour or so...).
Any sugestions ?

I wanted to share my experience with the audio/video sync, because this method works great for my backup of music concerts, but i still have the problem with the sub's.

However, if you are using the TMPGEnc/Ifoedit method to transcode an NTSC movie, it will not work. I hear before that it only works for PAL...

Tmpeg and NEVER had any Sync Problems ! All 100 % Rate
and great Quality

I use Ifoedit 0.93 and 0.94 .

What do I do ? :

1. Decrypt the DVD on HD
2. Use DVD2Avi and create Project File
3. Use Ifoedit 0.93 and create Tmpeg Proect File
4. Import DVD2Avi Project Fie into Tmpeg.
5. Import Ifo Edit Tmpeg Project File into Tmpeg.
6. Transcode.
7. Open Ifoedit 0.94 and use -> MOVIe ONLY -> REMUX AND STRIP Streams

That all, wll done ...

I must have done something wrong, because when i try to remux the m2v file created by TMPGEnc, the IFOEDIT 0.88 (or any other) crashes (stops responding). I have to try it again, with another movie.

But i would like to ask a question:

"Then press the Load button and select TmpgTemplate.txt that IfoEdit has created for you. This will effectively freeze TMPG for quite a while so go have a coffee (but don't take too long, it's only a couple of minutes tops)." - Doom9

How long does it actually takes (in average)? - I'm using a athlon 1800 XP and it took me almost an hour for TMPGEnc to come back ! Is this normal ?

With my PIII 700 it takes ~ about 1 or 2 minutes.

We're not doing the same thing here, on my P4 at 3ghz it takes about an hour too!

Here is a quick test to try:


Open TMPG with no d2v file (main window is grey with no black area where the video stream would appear)
Go to Setting > GOP structure > (select) Force picture type setting > Setting (you should have No video source is selected)
Click Clear and clear the list that is there
Load a TmpgTemplate.txt file

I just did it and it took about 20 seconds to load (it was 114 KB size).

EDIT: I just did it again, with the d2v loaded this time, and it was the same (21 seconds)

The difference is that john@sympatico.ca is getting only I frames from TMPGTemplate
and you are getting I,P,B frames...

I dont think so, the guides suggest not to do the p and the b frames, because that does not work? or something like that. In any case it works well for me.

When the TMPG template feature is working on, you can select the cancel button and a new window will appear.
This window ask for the standard GOP structure, IfoEdit will select all the "I" frames and all the other frames that doesn't match the Standard GOP structure you have selected.
Then you can click OK and IfoEdit will continue making the TMPG Template.
That's why you only need to select I frames...

But I still get problems when a NTSC VOB file has not twice the number of frames in the fields number. I mean, there are parts of the movie that mixes Interlaced with Progressive Video.

TMPGEnc works perfect with pure interlaced video and with pure progressive video.

But when a vob file mixes Interlaced and Progressive Frames, I couldn't get to work this TMPGEnc/Ifoedit thing...

That will probably work although I haven’t tried it yet. I’ve found so much good information on this site I thought I would give something back.
I use the following for NTSC DVD’s:

1. Rip the movie stream onto the HD.
I use SmartRipper 2.41. Do not demux but pay attention to which track files you want to keep.

2. Use DVD2AVI version 1.77.3 to demux the audio files and create a .d2v Project File.
Be sure and read the .txt file concerning [Forced Film], [TV Scale] and [Pre-Scale Decision] when decoding Dolby Digital. Also, make sure TMPG PLUS picks up the new version of VFAPI plug-in after you install DVD2AVI. You may need to reboot but make sure.

3. Use the TMPG PLUS Wizard for version 2.59 and load the .d2v project file.
The new project wizard will import the d2v project file and gray-out most of your options, which is fine. I did not make any changes and went with the default values with the exception of adjusting the source type and creating separate m2v and mp2 files, which I later deleted the mp2. I would advise using “DVD Encoding in TMPG” as a guide. Also, I did NOT use a TMPG Project File.

4. Encode the movie, which took me about 12 hours.

5. Author the DVD by using “DVD Authoring in IfoEdit”, which is found on this site. I used the latest version of IfoEdit .95 and did everything exactly as was written.

6. When all was finished, I did a GET VTS SECTORS and saved the files.

7. Burn the DVD.
I use RecordNow Max version 4.5.

I have successfully made Karaoke DVD’s and the latest StarwarsII using this method and I honestly can’t see or hear the difference between the original and the DVD’s I have made.
Everything worked fine and they played great on my standalone DVD player except I still don’t know how to save the original menu file…I’m too cheap to buy CCE. Any advice in this area would be much appreciated. :)
