I was wondering if someone would be willing to answer a few questions for me. I'm new to dvd burners and am having a problem. I know someone people will get annoyed with the following questions below, so I apologize but I am a newbie and have searched before posting.

I bought a CenDyne which is a rebadged Pioner A05 4x dvd-r burner.

I have two burning programs: Nero and PrimoDvd From what I've read, these are the popular two.

1. PrimoDvd does not detect my drive, I keep getting error messages. I am using engine 358. Anyone else have the same problem

2. I bought Ritek generation 3 media which I believe is 1x speed, but people reportedly have recorded 2x. I am using the lates Nero, and it's saying that at 1x speed it will take 180 minutes to record a dvd movie on the fly, is this normal, is it suppose to take that long? should I record at 2x speed?

3. What should my read speed be at when burning a dvd?

4. What's the best way to burn a dvd to dvd-r? Should I create an image file or copy on the fly? What about a data dvd? I was succesful using Roxio 5.5 to record a data dvd w/ mp3 songs. I really want to use nero to do my recordings, but it's confusing the heck out of me. I thought it would be like burning a cd but it's not. Can you post some NERO tips. Do you guys use the wizard or not?

p.s. the dvds that I am recording are already on dvd-r, so it's actually dvd-r to dvd-r. I will research smartripper and all that stuff later, but for now I just want to get the gist of things. Thank you all.

I can help with a few...

1. I like Prassi with my Pioneer A03 and A04. You probably need the latest Drive Engine and they have had TWO versions of 358. The last one I got was dated Oct 24. You can't find these on the US site, only on the European site...I don't have the address handy, sorry.

2. Maybe if you get Prassi going, it will write at 2X. However, rumor is that the newest firmware for the A04 really scurtinizes media and many have reported that media they were allowed to burn at 2X before updating their firmware no longer comes up as 2X after the update. I'm wondering if this conservative position is being held on the A05? And your times are way too slow. Even at 1X burning and copying the image to the disk and burning using Prassi, I'm good for about 70 - 80 minutes start to finish. That should be less on the fly, but I've never tested as each system only has one DVD player, the burner. However, time will be impacted by system specs also...I usually write to a RAID0 array and my burner is on a separate IDE header, with an Athlon XP 1800+ processor, Nforce chipset mobo and 512 MB DDRAM.

3. Not sure what you mean regarding read speed when burning? Most DVDs will "read" at 2X on my systems when I'm using either DVDDecrypter or DVDRipper to rip.

4. Can't comment regarding copying "on the fly"

NOTES ADDED UPON EDIT: Here's the Prassi website with the latest 358 engine which DOES list the A05 on the recognized list:
