Protected QuickTime Movies

Just to start out, I hate QuickTime and now, even more so. I downloaded the BMW Films from bmwfilms.com (cool short films). However, they're all in QT format with copy protection (can't extract with QT Pro), they all have flash menus, and it won't let me resave them (I can delete everything except the video/audio in QT, but then I can't save it like that). I tried the methods mentioned in the forum (every one of them, every program). I can load the file, but since the flash menus are first, they are the only things that load. If i I could rid of them, I could encode the movies fine. Does anyone know of a way to bypass the "no save" option in QT, or how to access the main movie/sound files. I have QT Pro 6, TMPG, QTReader.vfp.

I found a restricted quicktime movie that is played only on US systems (for copyright reasons), while I have a german version of the windows OS. When I start the movie in quicktime player, it refuses to play. The same happens in Media Player Classic player. Videolan plays the video all right, but not the audio. And the only software that is able to play both video and audio without restrictions is Vegas Video 4.0.

I tried to use Dumpster to unprotect the video,but the only function that is discussed on the internet in connection with dumpster is the hacking of the SAVING functions, while this video won't even open. So my best guess is that somehow the language zone restrictions must be altered. I tried to experiment with Dumpster, changing various values to 0's, but it simply doesn't work.

If somebody knows how to unrestrict this by using Dumpster, please post.

Also, I read that it should be possible to export the protected video through Vegas Video 4, thus eliminating the protections. But I couldn't find any export functions. The only thing I found was the reencode function ("Render as").

I installed the Sorenson Video codec Pro 3 and Qdesign quicktime audio codec professional, then selected them in Vegas Video and reencoded the quicktime video.

The resulting video is unprotected, but there are some disadvantages: first, I am no video expert, so the resulting video is double as big as the original, while video quality is a little worse.

And second, on my Pentium 550 with 256 mb ram it took over 2 hours to reencode this short video, while Vegas and the codecs were eating the ENTIRE cpu, even Internet Explorer refused to work during that time.

This is unacceptable. Therefore, for me, a Dumpster solution would be much better. If only I knew what to change there to remove the language restrictions...

Also, on some other forum someone suggested using QuickTime QuickEditor to remove the restrictions. But this is nonsense - I tested that programme and there is nothing helpful there.

So if someone of you knows how to use Dumpster for this kind of problem or if you know the optimal settings for the Sorenson and the Qdesign codecs, please post here.

Give the older bink and smacker program a whirl. I have transcoded tons of stuff by extracting to AVI with it. There is also an AviSynth plugin that sometimes works. I transcoded the "troops" downloads to MPEG2 and onto SVCD for watching on the TV. Granted this is not encrypted, but it does work.

there is no option in bink and smacker to convert mov files. at least I see none. btw, you are not the first person who claims that mov files can be converted in that programme. but I don't see how.

anyway, if I have to convert, I'll use Vegas Video. but I would like to unprotect without losing time and harddisk space for conversion.

Bink and Smaker makes it easier. Launch it up. Click on a quicktime file. Then click the convert button. Fill in any settings on the page that pops up, then click ok or whatever. I don't have it in front of me at the moment. It will then ask which codec you want to use. Pick your favorite, configure the settings and away you go.

If audio fails, you can get it using graphedit and the 3ivx splitter.
