For my current project, I've been toying with the idea of using Half D1 (CVD) resolution DVD's for my tv captures. I also want to be able to view these encodes on my PC and as such I've been reading a lot lately about the various deinterlacing methods available, most of which I've already used in the past but have had varying degrees of success with.
Tonight I was tweaking my current AVISynth script when I decided to revisit TMPGEnc's own deinterlace filters. I tried a few settings and stumbled across Double (field) which I hadn't ever used before, primarily because I'd expect 59.94fps afterwards which isn't DVD compliant. I selected it anyway, and back in the Video tab, I reset the Frame Rate from 59.94fps back down to 29.97fps (NTSC) and started encoding. The result is, this could possibly be the best deinterlacing method I've come across. The image remains nice and sharp, motion is very fluid and the end framerate is 29.97fps!
Now I'm getting a little confused since what I believe this effectively does is blend fields, but the picture looks sharper than I'd ever get using VirtualDub's own deinterlace (blend) filter. Can anyone help explain this?
Either way, I'm very happy with what TMPGEnc is producing. Anyone else try or currently using this method?
