Decent encode bitrates?

Anyone have a guideline for what are good bitrates to reencode a movie and still have a decent picture?

I saw a DVD-R backup someone bought in thailand that has star wars episode 2 on one DVD-R. They managed to squeeze it on, and the quality is actaully really good. When i watched it i didn't realize it was a dvd-r and that it was at a lower bit rate. My powerdvd player showed it had a bit rate anywhere from 1.5 to 3mbps which amazed me..i mean that's pretty damn low!

In my experience, if you use CCE, and you're encoding FILM, you can go down to 2500 kbps avg bitrate and see very little, if any, quality loss.

Personally, I've put Godfather II, which almost fills 2 DVD9s, onto a single DVD-R and I can't see any degradation.

I haven't had as good luck with NTSC though...

Using CCE I've been avg. 3700 VBR with no degrade.

Just to answer my own question in case anyone is curious...
I've found that around 40 or 50 on the quality setting for 1 pass-vbr in CCE yields excellent results. The typical bitrate is around 2.5mbps

and its all NTSC but FILM source through dvd2avi

For what it's worth...

On long films ("Magnolia"), I've dropped CCE all the way down to an average bitrate of 2300, quality setting of 5, 3-pass VBR with no noticiable loss in quality. But then again, Magnolia is mostly slow-moving scenes so it's a bit difficult to tell with that one...
