I am planning to buy a DVD+RW writer as soon as prices drop a bit further. In the meantime I am experimenting with DVD9 to DVD5 conversion with IfoEdit 0.95 using Domm9's IfoEdit guide as a guide.
I used the PAL DVD movie MOULIN ROUGE.
After decrypting with DVD Decryptor I get following files on my hard disk:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VIDEO_TS.VOB
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB
VTS_02_4.VOB
VTS_02_5.VOB
VTS_02_6.VOB
VTS_02_7.VOB
From VOBRator I find that:
VIDEO_TS.VOB has 14 VOB IDs with copyright notices in different languages
VTS_01_0.VOB is empty
VTS_01_1.VOB has 8 VOB ID with director’s comments
VTS_02_0.VOB has 46 VOB IDs with the menus
VTS_02_1.VOB to VTS_02_7.VOB have 3 VOB IDS. BOB ID 1 contains the studio logo and VOB IDs 2 and 3 contain the main movie
I wanted to get rid of the extras (copyright notices, director's comments), the menus and all but the english audio and subtitle streams, and then transcode to fit the movie on one DVD+R.
Step 1: Ripping
As everything I wanted to keep is in the main movie VOBs I loaded VTS_02_0.IFO in IfoEdit, selected VOB Extras and stripped the audio and subtitle streams I didn't need. On the dialog box I selected:
Strip Streams
Strip VOBIDs
Correct VOB Unit Pointers
Correct Original IFO Files
and deselected Autocopy Menu Files.
After the stripping I found that IfoEdit had created all required files (inclusive VIDEO_TS.IFO but not VIDEO_TS.VOB), and that the resulting movie played correctly on my PC using PowerDVD.
The new file set contained:
VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB
VTS_02_3.VOB
VTS_02_4.VOB
VTS_02_5.VOB
Step 2: Transcoding
Transcoding using ReMPEG2 went OK except that it stopped 1 picture short of the total number indicated on the ReMPEG2 main screen (183886 i.s.o 183887). However, the .m2v file played OK in Windows Media Player.
Step 3: Adding the Video Stream
Went OK. However this time IfoEdit did not create the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. I copied the VIDEO_TS.IFO file that IfoEdit created in step 1. The result played OK on my PC using PowerDVD.
Note: When I tried to exit IfoEdit after completion of the Final Sector Adjustments procedure, IfoEdit came up with a message saying "some files have changed - really want to exit?". As I understand that the IFO files were saved automatically during the procedure, I selected to Exit without Saving, and PowerDVD played the movie correctly, so I assume that what I did was correct.
Step 4: Creating Image
I used ImgTool for the image creation. Creation of the virtual drive went OK and I found the drive in explorer. However the created image was very small. Checking the contents of the image with winiso I noticed that it only contained the VIDEO_TS.* files. In the forum postings I read somewhere that ImgTools requires a consecutive set of files, and in my case VTS_01 was missing. I therefore created empty files VTS_01_0.BUP and VTS_01_0.IFO. ImgTool then created a correct image. I found that the movie, with the dummy files added, played correctly on my PC with PowerDVD. Having no DVD burner as yet, I am however not sure if the movie will play correctly on a standalone player.
Note: I am using Windows XP but found that I did not need to edit IFOEDIT.INI for the COMMAND.COM path as indicated in the Doom9 guide.
