View Full Version : who buys cce?

firstly this is not a warez question?
Quite simply, who buys ce sp for $1950. It seems such a prohibitive price for mpeg 2 encoding given the availability of competitors like tmpeg and main concept. From what I gather tmpeg is able to compete with cce yet only costs a fraction of the amount. main concepts encoder is nearly as fast as cce and produces acceptable output.
I normally encode divx. For instance if the newest divx version cost 1000 euro everyone would simply use xvid or even divx 3.

tmpgenc cant match cce for really low bitrate encodes, and the price of CCE SP is actually low compared to a hardware solution to produce as good quality.

Wrong question on wrong place. Amateurs certainly will not pay so much...

True, us amateurs cannot afford CCE. But, what about the "LITE" version? I think it was "only" about $300. How does that version stack up against the competitors, or does it even work in the scenario's which we use here?

/me thanks ENFUSiA for my copy of Cinema Craft Encoder SP v2.64.01.10

true cce is probably best at low bitrates, but to be honest I haven't really seen mpeg 2 utilised for low bitrate work. I'd imagine mpeg one would suffice for trailers, short demos and the like. I'd love to know how many copies they sell a year.

The LITE version only supports CBR. That's not worth $300 in my opinion.

What's the purpose of this thread?

Question to you: "Who buys Windows XP Pro?" According to your logic it's also not competitive to e.g. Free BSD. But it is. In the same way that CCE has many pros to all the other MPEG2 software encoders.

BTW, CCE isn't the only MPEG2 encoder out there. Canopus Procoder, TMPGEnc Pro, Ligos etc. etc.

I personally don't like this "It's too expensive" whining. It's a free market and nobody forces you to do anything. If it's expensive then don't buy it (and certainly don't steal it). As soon as my friend with his credit card drops by, I will buy my TMPGEnc Pro license, and that is enough for me. Why would I bother of CCE et al?

IMO, 99% of the people that use warez of such expensive programs, just do it as sort of a status symbol (it's very complicated and hard to use a P2P client, you know)... Most of them doesn't even know the difference between GOP and PONG.

There are enough freeware and cheap shareware programs out there to do video editing, encoding etc. without using warez, this is the main reason why I started my freeware list, to make my contribution for this awareness. If some leet warez user wants to use a multi K dollar program for his pirate copies of DVDs and his leet DV footage, then it's his thing. It's also his thing if he gets a nice fine by the local police.

Like Auenf already told, CCE isn't that expensive at all if you look at the prices of the good hardware encoders. Also you could take a look at the prices of professional video workstations (AVID, DPS etc.).

If we were really pedantic we should pay royalties for every e.g. DVD2AVI version we use.

Never jump to conclusions. You would be surprised how many people here are not amateurs.

And so on.

Cheers,

Mijo.

Mijo: "Never jump to conclusions. You would be surprised how many people here are not amateurs."

I will believe you when I see here that someone post here this: "Yes, I payed it, and I make money with it" :-)
Seriously: I don't think that pros spend much time on this board.

Other reason why I said that place is wrong... see post of NeVeRLift.

hold on a second. i think you're takingme up wrong. I personally don't use cce or mpeg 2 encoding at all. They can price it at whatever level they like. All I was wondering is how the company makes money out of it when it seems that near perfect substitutes exist at a fraction of the price. Its not a similar argument to "Xp Pro". Some people buy MS OSes since most games and apps are written for them. Thats something Free BSD doesn't offer.

I know of at least 2 "pro's" who are members of this forum, and prefer not to be mentioned.

As for Neverlift... I'm sure he's proud of his mad P2P and IRC skills, as they require so much talent, ingenuity and skill to acquire illegal and undeserved software.

If I have to spend that much money on one software, I rather buy a good capture card that can transcode into MPEG-1/2 automatically in real time straight away. It's faster :)

As I'm here I will answer your comment. No, I wasn't refering to you (see my "what's the purpose of this thread?" question). My analogy wasn't perfect but it had a point.

As for my knowledge there is no perfect substitute for CCE (just like there is no perfect substitute for the various OS), mainly speed wise and even quality wise only Canopus Procoder can beat it. But, people like mb1 who've tested all of these programs AND they even know the difference between PONG and GOP could say more about it.

As for MPEG 2 encoding, generally, there is a big difference between the different encoders/decoders. That's the whole point. Everyone should look for his perfect solution.

I could write for hours why Windows XP Pro et al are used (games should not be a argument for a server, IMO). A big point is that the average company CEO doesn't like comments like "Er, I will post a kernel (or whatever you like :D ) bug report in the Usenet, we'll maybe get a reply these days". ;)

BTW, wonder how many people looked in a DV Glossary for the meaning of PONG :D .

Who says that it's faster? :D Again, it depends on what you want... On faster machines CCE is faster than real time, if you want to edit/filter your material, capturing to MPEG 2 is not something you would want.

Speed and quality are the main pros of CCE.

I've brought up these arguments in a e-mail discussion a few weeks ago.

Eh, whatever, again, a long and boring posting by myself.

Thank you all for not turning this thread into a flamewar. :)

Cheers,

Mijo.
