Hi,

The question should look trivial to any hardware expert, but I could not find any clear (yes/no) answer about it so fare.

I own an Abit TH7-II-Raid FSB 400 with a P4 1.6 Northwood and 256Mb PC800 Rambus. This mobo bios can support P4 up to 2.4Ghz.

My question is : can I use a P4 2.4B FSB 533 on this motherboard, "downclocked" to a 400 FSB?

Why do I bother you may wonder?
- well, P4 2.4B FSB 533 are more easily available to me;
- I want to be able to upgrade to 533 mobo later.

Thanx for your help guys.

Cheers.

Yes. Ive seen it, on that specific board, you might wanna give the mobo manufacturer a call. But on some of the boards that my company sells, it is downward compatible. (Gigabyte, Biostar) Intel, Asus not tested, or no complaints yet...

Thanx for insight fuct!

I wish someone had tested that on my mobo.

Doom9 forums dealing more with AV, can anybody redirected me to a good hardware forum on the net (in english or in french). The one I have came accross until now are quite lame (I did not even post).

I think you can give the P4 2,4B on this board, BUT: the 533 (133) mhz version of the P4 2,4 has got a multiplier of 18. Intel does not allow to change the multiplier - but the fsb is "free"...
So if you stick this cpu on your board, you would get a P4 1,8 resulting of the multiplier of 18 together with the 400 (100) mhz fsb -> as for now you´ve got 1,6 ghz this would make no sense... ;-)

Thanx for this cristal clear explanation Rick!!

I'll have to get a 2.4A asap, because in my sample of best-buy shop in Paris its price is actually increasing(!) over 2.4B model.

:devil: This multiplier locking is a pure swindle :devil:
