Problem with playing recompiled DVD on standalone

Software used - DVD Decrypter (ripping and decrypting vob files)
- VobEdit (demultiplexing video, audio and subtitles streams)
- ReMPEG (changing bitrate for m2v files)- IfoEdit (authoring DVD)
- ImgTools (making image)
I had a DVD movie on two layer DVD that even after stripping all unnecessary
things (menus, addons etc) did not fit DVD-R.

Using DVD Decrypter I have ripped all essential vob files on HDD and than using VobEdit I have stripped audio stream and two subtitles streams (in my case Enflish and Polish). Using ReMPEG I have recompiled video stream reducing bitrate down to 85% of the original. At the end I had one video stream (m2v), one audio stream (dts), two subtitiles streams (sup) and finally one cell time text file. I have decided to use IfoEdit to create ne DVD. All streams were accepted and the remux went OK - no errors no buffer underrun and so on.

After the compilation I did also "Get VTS Sectors". Before burning DVD I have tested newly created set of vob's and ifo's under WinDVD 4 - perfect play with exception of audio (WinDVD 4 does not support DTS). I have burned DVD-RW (Instanr CD/DVD 6.5) and once again I have tested newly created DVD under WinDVD 4- again no problems but DTS.

The problem starts when I want to play DVD on standalone player - Sony DVP-NS700V. The player reports no errors but does not want to play movie. It displays only "1" and when I am pressing "Play" button nothing happens.

I have three questions with respect to this problem:
1 - Is it possible that the player does not want to run because of DVD-RW? The same RW disc plays perfectly when I am ripping the DVD that after stripping unecessary streams fits on 4.7 GB without video recompilation.
2 - Is it about IfoEdit? If yes what can I do to overcome this?
3 - Any other software which allows to mux streams into vob files and is able to cope with sup files (the ones which comes out from VobEdit).

During those 5 days of waiting period I was reading the forum but the only hint I have found was about "Get VTS sectors" - anyway this also did not solve the problem.

Did you test the movie in WinDVD with the dvd-rw disc or the ifo's and vob's?.

Since your standalone player didnt generate an error it looks like it can read dvd-rw. Probably your problem lies with the First Play command since the dvd player does not know what to load up initially.

If your using maestro then there is an option in there, otherwise if you are using Ifoedit and have retrieved all VTS sectors for all IFO files and the DVD did'nt generate an 'illegal navigation' error then i dont know what the problem could be.

Yes I did and WinDVD has no problem with playing the movie.

I also suspect that but was suprised that WinDVD plays the disc.

Does it make sense to do the authoring in slightly different way. First strip all unnecessary streams so the IfoEdit will create the VIDEO_TS. Than demux audio and change bitrate and than once again remux newly created video stream into the vobs but take existing VIDEO_TS. I am asking because I am a newbie in this "business" and still lerning how all those bits and pieces work together.

I would appreciate any comment.

Looks to me like you have done everything necessary to create your VOB set.

The issue looks like your DVD media (-RW) while about 80% of players will handle -R they are more fussy with the -RW type.

Have you tried burning direct to -R media ?

Not yet but I think I need to do it. I have not so far because I did not want to waste disc in case of fuck-ups caused by me or software - DVD-RW was used for testing. Is it possible that some movies are accepted on DVD-RW and other not. I have tested some 5 movies on DVD-RW withouit any problems (movies that fits 4.7G without bitrate change).

Try DVD-R.

Some standalone players won't play DVD-RW but are quite happy with DVD-R.

Worth a try.

I have a small problem at present, I have just created my very first DVD-R which I shot via my camcorder.

Compilied it with DVD Workshop, and burnt using Nero (Using Media I have used loads of times before.

The disc plays on my PC, and Settop (Pioneer 444) but wont play on my PS2. I'm not bothered by this, but just goes to show, there are still a lot of differences in the world of DVD. I have a few other options to try, but they all take so much time.

I had a similar problem with my backup of the X-files Movie.
I also have a SONY table DVD player and it would hang while looking
for title 6 (yours is looking for something to do with title 1).
This happened due to several reasons but one of them was that the main movie is VTS_2_xx.XXX not VTS_1_xx.XXX.
I ended up not keeping any menus, just the movie. However, rather than authoring the movie from streams, I used the remux step of IFOEDIT (and stripped streams in the same step). Also, I checked the 'create new IFO files' box. Finally, I used IFOEDIT 0.88, which may have helped.

I don't think there's any problem with DVD+RW media because otherwise
the disk woudn't even load (As is the case for my older MUSTEK player).

Update to my previous message.

The reason why your DVD plays on the PC is probably that the PC player skips any items not found while the SONY DVD player is less tolerant. My initial DVD backup of X-files played OK in PowerDVD 4, and IFOEDIT's DVD player, but not on the SONY.

I have similar problem with some dvd movie backup. I noticed all of this happened with movies that I have to use rempeg2 to reduce the bitrate and remux with ifoedit95. I read somewhere that you should try using ifoedit06 to do the remux and that problem goes away for some. I am waiting for my pc to redo the rempeg and will do the remux tonight and see the burned dvd-rw will play without skipping on my standalone player tonight.

If you contnue to have problems try making a disc image befoe you burn. I had similar problems when I first started, and using Imgtool sorted out a few of them for me.

What are you using to burn ... i had the exact same problem...

I had burnt around 30 using VOB Instant and they all worked fine and brilliantly...

I then did one and it didn't play atall.... it just said loading on my player then stopped....

Someone told me to create an img in imgtools then use dvddecyrpter in Write mode.... This solved the problem!

Days and hours of hard working (not always mine but still) pays. I do not know whether it is a scientific approach to solution but still some kind of.

Finally I made to burn DVD-RW that plays on standalone DVD after "rempeging" the movie. First I have ripped the DVD and using IfoEdit remove all unnecessary crap (sound streams, subtitles, menus and so on) leaving only what is needed. Contradictory to my previous approach I did not extract all streams (video, audio and subtitles) and remux them once again but extract only movie stream and rempeg with TMPGEnc (I need to work a little on quality but who said it would be easy). Then I remuxed the new video stream into the existing vobs so their size was reduced. I did couple of trys remuxing so called "pure" streams (video, audio and subtitles) into the completly new vobs but in all cases I was not able to play it on standalone. It is difficult to believe that this is the fault of IfoEdit but who knows.

I hope some of you will benefit from hard work of my PC.

Congratulations !! But don't get too carried away. Rempeg2 does have a few disadvantages, some of which are'nt to apparent. I used it for my first 10 or so rips, but the problems started (pixelation, and a few others as well).

But it get you going.
