View Full Version : Star Wars II: white spot with perm. subs and intro missing

RB
5th December 2002, 14:55
I'm encoding Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones in D2S. Because the
main movie is multi-angle and I needed angle 2 to get the "scrolling
text intro" in German, I used DVDDecrypter to rip this angle (the
internal ripper rips only angle 1) to a temporary folder. Then when
I started the conversion in D2S, I re-ripped from these already
ripped IFO/VOBs with internal rip. I also ripped subtitles
(permanent) to get the "alien talking subs". The subtitle stream I
selected in the subtitle selection dialog was "0x2B - Deutsch(DE) -
Mode: Letterbox". The encoding finished just fine but there are the
following two problems with the result:

[list=1]
The part with the scrolling intro text ("In a galaxy far, far
away ...") at the beginning is missing. It's there in the first VOB
ripped by DVDDecrypter but missing in the first D2S re-ripped VOB
(checked with WinDVD). The re-ripped first VOB is also smaller than
the original VOB. Is this DVDDecrypter screwing up something in the
VOBs or a potential issue with the internal rippers? Note: I
initially tried the internal ripper to rip from the DVD and I got
the intro, but in English (angle 1 - I need 2).

I'll try to directly encode from the DVDDecrypter VOBs and report
back if this fixes this problem.

Most of the time there is a small vertical white line in the movie.
It always disappears exactly at the time a subtitle is displayed
(the subtitles work fine, remember I used permanent subtitles) but
then reappears some time later, disappears when the next subtitle is
shown and so on. I did not see it in the preview window (Go -
Preview (still picture)). This makes me believe that it has
something to do with the subtitles. Also, I checked the subtitle
bitmaps D2S generated in the subtitles folder. There are 35 bitmaps
but only about half of them (3, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 20, 23, 24, 26,
27, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34) have text, the others are just small black
bitmaps.

I'm attaching screenshots from the movie to visualize the effect.
The first is taken shortly before the first "alien subtitle" is
displayed (note the small white spot in the black bar at the top)
and the second is taken at the time the first subtitle is shown
(white spot disappeared). Make sure to view the image in it's
original size.

If this looks like a potential bug, I'm glad to supply any
additional information and tests required to solve it.

Hmm, sorry, can't seem to upload the file. Tried a smaller JPG (67379 bytes) in the first reply and it doesn't show up either. When I edit the message and click on the link to the attachment it says invalid link?

Can't help you with your problem and I can see it, but I don't know what to do.
I just wanted to let you know all attachments must be approved by a mod before being posted to the board. This will lead to a lag time between your posting an image or another file and it showing up on the board. This is to keep out Porn, warez and other not wanted material.

@markrb:

Thanks for the info! Understood.

@bach:

Thanks. You are right, I was wrong when I wrote that there are totally black subtitle BMPs. The "blank" ones actually have that vertical line in the upper left corner (I didn't see that initially). Real strange. Anyway, I think editing the permsubs.txt file is best, I'll do that and do a crash recovery from video encoding. Thanks for the idea!

Still wondering why it left out the intro part, though...
