Does DVD damage CD-RW drive?

So I'm watching TV and I hear my girlfriend going crazy on my CD-RW drive..like mass inserting/ejecting CDs. I figure she's just trying to find a song or something. Anyways, after about 1/2 hour, she tells me my "cd thingy sucks!" I get up..and get this..she's been trying to get a DVD to play on my CD-RW drive all along!!!! :eek:

So, to make a long story short, now my CD drive has burned 6 straight coasters. Does anybody know:
1) Did the DVD damage the laser..can it even do that?
2) It's a fairly new Lite-on burner, so maybe its defective..if I claim it for warranty, can they tell what really made it stop working?
Any ideas appreciated,

Just take it back. No matter why it died, if it's in warranty, take it back. Inserting a DVD shouldn't bother it, and if it does, it's a bad design. The only harm I can think of is the spindle motor due to the higher mass allowed for DVDs (20g), but if you're burning coasters that means the motor is turning.
