Would it be worth waiting to pick up a DIVX capable dvd player in the future or go with SVCD right now? Big quality difference?
Thanks:confused:

Divx should give you much better quality if ripped correctly and aswell most divx movies look good on a single disc.
But then again, how much are these players going to cost and are they upgradable to future versions of the divx codec??
Maybe wait a bit more and buy yourself a dvd burner, cos thats the future trend.

the only advantage SVCD has over MPEG4 is that it can be played on a standalone DVD player. quality difference is quite obvious (compare max resolutions). a 1 CD MPEG4 rip (I'm saying MPEG4 since both XviD and DivX beat out SVCD) will look better than a 2 CD SVCD rip (at least what I've seen, I don't touch SVCD for DVD backup, just a little for DV to be played back places I don't want to take my camera/laptop).
Think about it this way: if you use SVCD, once MPEG4 becomes the standard for DVDs (or they might change the name, seeing as it will be a different standard), your SVCDs will become obsolete. I'm sure by that time, our current MPEG4 rips will look like SVCD does now compared to DVD. I would continue to use DivX/XviD for your rips, and wait. It will be some time before MPEG4 becomes the standard, but it will be there one day. SVCDs are a thing of the past, so go towards the future with MPEG4....(that probably sounds stupid, but it works) ;)
PS..about a DVD burner, that is the absolute better choice, but is quite expensive. one thing I love about DivX rips is it costs ~$0.25 for a very close replica of the DVD ~~> high bitrate & AC3 sound ~~> 2 CDs. I'm too poor to afford a DVD burner/blank DVDs.

I don't think this will happen too fast. And once it does happen (if ever) I'm quite sure that these MPEG4-DVDs will be fixed to certain resolutions like the DVD standard today. But the "normal" resolution for 1 or 2 CD rips today is something like 640*xxx (or lower), and I don't expect that these resolutions will be defined by that new standard (too low res.).
The result will be non-standard-media if you burn/author those MPEG4-DVDs with rips made today. Your rips will become obsolete....
