Adobe's MPEG Encoder

Anyone who uses Premiere 6.5, what do you think of Adobe's MPEG encoder? I've been playing around with it for some SVCDs (new to those, want to try it out for DV playback, so I don't have to take my camera or laptop everywhere to play movies). It's not CCE (I've played around with that, don't feel like buying it though). Just want to hear some opinions, maybe from people who can compare it to TMPG or CCE as well. ~~~~> it's defintely more convinient (sp?), being able to export directly to MPEG2 instead of exporting to DV and then using another program to convert to MPEG2.

Easy answer: yes, it's more convenient, but with TMPGEnc or CCE you get better quality.

I guess your referig to the Mainconcept encoder.

I've just encoded my first Dv movie (source Canon XM1) edit programme was Pure Motion Edit Studio.

First impression is very good (and I've used CCE a lot, for commercial movies)

Certainly more "cost effective" than CCE.

I've spent alot of time doing small 15 second tests with the mpeg encoder. Premiere frameserves the encoder, just like CCE. If you set the video to "remove flicker" in Premiere, then encode with the mpeg2 encoder, the results are very good (better than CCE). Premiere has a deinterlace option too, so I'm not really sure what "remove flicker" or "deflicker" is or means, but the results are very good. This is the trick!!

I've never got good quality out of TMPGEnc using DV source. I play back the resulting mpeg2 full screen on my 19" monitor with WinDVD and the output is poor (compared to CCE) no matter what cominations of settings/filters I use, maybe I'm doing something wrong. However using DVD movie source I've had excellent results with TMPGEnc.

The CCE 2.5 plugin produces very good results, but there is a memory leak on both my XP1700 and P4 computers. My P4 has 768MB ram and can run until the system hits 2GB mem useage (about 2 hours of encoding), then Premiere hangs. I can't find a fix for this. This is why I tried Premiere 6.5's mpeg2 encoder.

I admit I'm new to DV-->DVD encoding, maybe I'm doing something wrong. I just tried this "deflicker" option last night and have not burned it to a DVD-RW to test this on a standalone DVD player yet. All I know is it looks great on the computer.

try using a program like MPower to clear your memory once it gets to a certain level. could fix your problem.

I use CCE 2.64 plugin in Premiere 6.5 and have never had a memory leak problem. It encodes 2 or 3 hours movies, VBR 4 multipass and no problems.
Maybe 2.5 has a leak, or perhaps you're using a cracked version?

Going from CCE 2.5 to 2.64 fixed everything. Quality wise, Premiere's mpeg encoder and CCE are the same in side by side simutanous testing. TMPGEnc last place.
