hey all.
could anyone help me with how the crosspoint works? i always rip to 2cds with nandub (divx3.11) and i'm trying to figure out how to calculate the crosspoint. i'm ripping the patriot right now and i'm using a crosspoint of 380 and my symetric curve compression is set to 25%. if i raise the crosspoint i get a higher calculation in the curve. is there a formula that i can use to find the right crosspoint for the movie? if u know any good methods please reply. thanks

@kronik

1.) You can set a crosspoint value of 460 for 2CD rips, and a crosspoint value of 280 for 1CD rips, then hit the "Calc." button and use the curve compression ratio Nandub spits out.

2.) You can try changing the crosspoint value (lower or higher according to your needs) until you reach the curve compression ratio you want to use.

having a small number in symetric is better, right? does it really matter then what u put in the crosspoint? could i put 150 in for a 2h45m movie so i can get a low number for symetric? thanks

What's your target video and audio size? What's the Aspect Ratio of the movie(1:2.35? 1:1.85? 1:1.33, etc.), and what resolution/resizing method are you using?

video would be around 1200mb and mp3 audio would fill the rest of the 2 cds...this movie is 2h45min..if it were shorter i would probably use the ac3 track for sound depending on the bitrate i get from my calculations for ac3. aspect ratio is 2.35:1 and i use bilinear resizing to 640X272 (for this ratio).
some more questions... is asymetric better then symetric? and does the crosspoint have an affect on it as well?
the keyframes quality drf line, can i put this better than default 4x and 31x?...i'm noticing blocks it some scenes where it would definetly have keyframes

thanks

@kronik

You can cap Key Frame DRF values as 2/4 and for a 2CD rip you can use at least BicubicResize(640,272,0,0.5) instead of Bilinear. As for the curve compression you can even use "0" IMHO ;).

i thought bicubic resizing is for going larger then the original. do u know if u can change it to bicubic after the first pass or does the stats file do something with resizing...thanks again

@kronik

No you can't change your resizing method in the second pass! Always use the same avisynth script for both passes.

do u have an example of a script (avs) file? i use the resizing in nandub and load my d2v file, but i'm down with using a script...i noticed u put something like 640, 272, 10, 10...would that be width, height, crop top, crop bottom? and if so, are the crop numbers the same as nandubs? what else do i need in the script? thanks

Man, I really would like to help you more, but it's really impossible for me to summarize "everything" which are/were discussed in many different threads and some basic concepts that are explained in many guides around. Please try to read and search for information more. Good luck with your encodes!

seems fair :)
sorry if i was asking too many questions, thanks for your help anyway. i've decided it's time to move onto xvid and leave behind the ancient stuff hehe.

@kronik

I think you have made the best decision by switching to XviD! Though, I must admit that Nandub SBC still doesn't seem ancient to me ;).
