I purchased a Sony DRU5000 recently and since I am fairly new to the DVD side of things I have been testing backing up by writing to the Sony DVD+RW that came with the machine. I have tested my backup on my Sony stand alones (both) and my Apex. All seem to work with no hitch. I would like to reduce the cost of the disc but not at the loss of being able to play on all my recorders. Is there a generally accepted format + or - and moderately price disc that seems to work on all records?

I've seen some players that only like + media. Just go for what your player likes and don't worry about the rest unless you're making some for a friend, then use whatever works on his for those copies.
- is definately cheaper. Which is why I use it. No coasters!

Ok more confusion. If it works great on DVD+RW does it mean it should work on an equal quality DVD+R?

So the industry has not evolved enough to have any consistency correct?

Check out the compatability list for DVD players at www.vcdhelp.com
I know that my Apex player (5131) supports all the formats, but the RAM, but then again who does?
The Sony players tend to be a bit more fickle in general.
From just what you have said here I would feel comfortable saying that the Apex will most likely play them all without a hitch, but would be cautious on the Sony.
If that was my writter I would buy the -R discs becuase they are cheaper right now.
I don't own a writter now, but really want that one. Sadly though it's too much right now for me to afford. :(
Ok now everyone let out a sigh of sadness for me.
