How to repair XviD Bad (Frozen) Frames?

Hi,

I have a XviD encoded movie with some frozen frames.

I don't want to cut them so I wonder if there is a tool, like AviDefreezer for DivX3 to repair this movie?

Or another method...

I've never heard of a frozen frame in XviD - it would imply either that your storage device is flawed (bad CD or HDD sector) or XviD has a bug.

What exactly happened?

It could be a function of your player. Which one are you using?

I think CdinT means that there's sometimes small pauses in playback. They are not frozen frames it's just because your cpu can't handle the decoding. B-frames and QPel takes lot more cpu processing power to be decoded. Sometimes it helps then you burn the files to CD. Also check out your post processing settings, especially if you use ffdshow. Your settings might be too high for your cpu.

What kind of hard disk do you have? Enabling DMA helps a lot. What player are you using? My advice don't use BSPlayer, Zoomplayer or Mediaplayer 6.** are much better.

I scanned the movie with VDub 1.3c (the modified version with bad frames search) and it found some bad frames. And if go in VDub to that frame number I get the "Error fetching frame ####:VideoSourceAvi error: unspecified error (-100)".

So there are definitevely bad frames and it's not a bug of XviD or player or codec settings.

It's not something I encoded so how did the frozen frames get there it's probably someone's computer in the chain of downloads corrupted the file :)

I had the same problem lately - the bad frames were definitely introduced by harddisk/network transfer errors (occured during a time when I had a lot of crashes).

I never found a way "around" but cutting the bad frames out.

If you want to keep the clip as it is and watch it anyways, use the ffdshow filter instead of the XVID Dshow Filter. Ffdshow just doesn't care for bad frames and keeps on playing.:D

50% of the files i download from kazaa have corrupted frames,
if de freeze doesnt work try re download until the corrupted part,
i NEVER got 2 downloads with same corrupted frames,
there could be some new thought.
Then merge the different downloads in vdub.

of course you should have an utility that saves partial downloads, then use divx fix,
i did so also for files that could be de-freezed, since fixed frames were always very bad

I've always dreamed of an utility like this one:

but for MPEG videos. It would be really wonderful, because you could tell which videos are corrupted, or have sync errors, without having to watch them one by one.

Unfortunately, it seems that such an utility doesn't exist :(

Is any coder here interested in making it? I think it would be very useful. :)

This tool would be a commercial killeraplication. With million people downloading illegal, pirated content, announcing that publically here where we have a more-than-strict anti-piracy policy this all sums up to:

i do this a lot for divx 3.11 encode divx.

Sorry, I don't understand your post (maybe it's the language, I'm not a native English speaker).

I don't see the relationship between warez and a tool to check for sync errors and corruption in MPEG1/2/4 files (I have files that are corrupted because of defective sectors in my hard drive).

I think it's very cumbersome to watch an entire movie just to check if it has any error. A tool to automate this task would be useful, in my humble opinion.

Just because I have many MPEG files (mostly small clips I capture with my DVB-s card) it doesn't necessarily mean that I'm doing anything illegal.

What's wrong with having a tool to check the integrity of my files?

I just wish that WinXP's chkdsk tool generated a proper log file whenever it finds defective sectors. That way I could know which files had been corrupted and which ones not. But the sad truth is that chkdsk's log (located in Administrative Tools, Event Viewer) is often filled with strange alphanumeric characters and makes no mention about the names of the files. So I'm left wondering which files are really corrupted and the only way to be sure is to re-watch each and every one of them. It's annoying, believe me!

This is pretty old but I am curious as to whether there is an update to this problem. Is there yet a way to fix bad/frozen frames in file encoded with xvid? Like avidefreezer does for divx for example.

I'm not talking about checking. Nor am I only talking about mpeg-2 files. In fact I am mostly talking about avi files, and specifically, about "correcting" bad frames like avidefreezer does for divx files. maybe I didn't entirely understand your answer but it seems to not answer the question. Furthermore, I did a search and haven't seen anything about this. This might mean that the status is the same...xvid frmes can't be fixed.
