Does someone has tested On2 VP4/5 for DVDRip?

No Doom9 wanted to. But he could not afford it just to test and ON2 was not gonna give up a demo copy. The threads are still here if you search for em.

there's a a VP4 test right here: http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Docs/codecs.rar But as it turns out some people at On2 didn't particularly like the fact that I got my hands on a demo copy and my request for a copy of VP5 was subsequently denied (or that's what I take a lack of a definitive answer for months for).

I can't download the file. Since the dot at the end is considered part of the URL, I first get a 404 and when removing the dot after that, I only get redirected to your leech.htm. No DL-Manager running, no proxy or something...

One could also speculate that they didn't want Doom9 to test their codec because they know that it sucks...

Somebody find out the name of the en/decoder dll of VP4/5 and the internal ON2 API ( for sure its not VfW ) they use to access the codec from their encoding apps ( they have any ? ), so we can make a UCI wrapper for it and we will be able to use it with MCF and maybe even OGM ....

EDIT : While i am thinking about it, i am maybe posting rubbish in this respect here :D

Anybody care to tell me how exactly any ON2 codecs are normally used in practice by those who bought it ? Can you use it in Virtualdub for AVI ? If so, how do you play it and how do they make sure their encoders and decoders are not hacked, similar to MPEG4V3 ?

I know there is a VfW interface for VP3/Theora, at least for the time being ... but what about VP4 and VP5 ? What container are they normally used in ?

They have their own container or at least something similar to RealMedia. I once watched their streaming samples and to do that I had to install a special RealPlayer/RealOne Plug-In. The files had the suffix ".vp4" ( or was it 5 already? can't remember ).

But I haven't seen an encoder app yet.

The name of their VP4/5 encoder is "On2 Professional Encoder 4.0", they assume it's the best video encoder ever released... I'd like to trust them, but I'd have to test before :D.
The only thing I managed to get from them was a client decoder, tu see their work on the net :(.

There's a codec with a VFW interface for the encoding part so it can be used in all standard video encoding applications. The main difference is that without a dongle you're not going to get a single frame encoded.
As for playback there's a DS filter which does not require a dongle and works completely independent of the encoder (as a matter of fact I reviewed the VP4 clips after sending the dongle back).

They also seem to have a specialized encoding application that allows you to fine-tune the codec. Unfortunately I never got my hands on this application.

Thanks for clarifying Doom9. Seems that knowing the internal API doesnt help much then, as the encoder will still check for the existence of the dongle :( ...
