Why don't you use the Usenet

Hello,

compared to an HTML-forum the usenet offers superior usability and features. For example the possibility to use your own news client is one big advantage. Another advantage is that all the posts on usenet are stored in a big database (groups.google.com) - so you have access to all the discussions and all the solutions in one place. You don't have to search different homepages and HTML-boards. I think there will always be a usenet archive on the net - but we don't know how long doom9 will be able to maintain doom9.net. The day when doom9.net is closed will be the day when all the valuable data in this forum gets lost.

Doom9 does a great job by maintaining this page and all the people in this forum do a great job because they share their knowledge. But all in all I think the usenet would be a much better place to discuss...

Make ONE signle post to usenet and get your mailbox full of SPAM. That is a very good reason for using a closed forum like this one. Besides, take a look at the forum rules. Each and every one is there for a reason, to make it possible to provide the best help and suggestions for creating DVD/(S)VCD/AVI clips. Without these we get total anarchy. My experience of the usenet is that one post in a hundred is actually worth reading. Here at least 95% are relevant to the subject.

"What is usenet?" - would most ppl ask now. Maybe that's the reason. Personally I like web forums better (just because), but if I need to find an answer I also go to groups.google.com first :)

The day when doom9.net is closed will be the day when all the valuable data in this forum gets lost.
I don't think that day will come soon and even if it should ever happen.. what is preventing me from offering the whole forum database for download - sort of leaving a legacy.

And, I don't like email based discussions, I'm part of two mailing lists and usability of these lists is terrible.

Also, all you need is a webbrowser to participate here.. for Usenet you need an email account so when you're on a place different from home you have to use clumsy webinterfaces.

Usenet has problems, but more message boards with NNTP interfaces would be nice. You have so much more freedom in selecting the way the discussions are represented.

I think that beside described things here this form has advantage that it has better overwiev of posts, it looks better etc...

hakko504: spam is no problem, as you can see a lot of people are using newsgroups. Most of them just use a email address which is only used on usenet (hotmail for example). So they have no problems with spam

Doom9: nothing would prevent you from offering this database as a download but this means that we depend on you. on the other hand there could be a reason which prevents you from offering this database - who knows.
if all the people posting in newsgroups would use boards like this, all the information would be spread in different places and noone would ever know how to find a solution for a certain problem. finding information would be a lot harder if there where no common place like groups.google.com to find this information. but if all people would use the usenet, all information would be stored in ONE single database.
another advantage: all the stupid questions wouldn't be asked over and over again.
usenet is much more than email based discussion! everyone could use the client which fits best... everyone can configure such a client in a certain way...
If I remember right, you can't register on forum.doom9.org without a valid email account - so what's the point? And be honest, everyone has an email account!
What's the difference between such an clumsy html forum an a clumsy html usenet-client???
there is no need for you to change your forum, as newsgroups already exist - so all the people could just move...

ppera2: I don' think so. 1. I you want to, you can easily implement a html usenet-client, which looks exactly the same way as this forum. 2. this board does not even have a tree view - so don't tell me anything about better overview.
