I want to try something new

Hello people,

I have converted around 6 dvds to divxes. The quality that I got was awesome. The audio was in sync. No problem in this area. I get what i want to do. Store my favorite DVDs to Divxes and then burn them onto a DVDR. (btw i use Gordian Knot and believe me it rocks)

But here lies the problem. Everything is working fine. This way I dont learn much. I dont experiment much. And frankly I want to experiment a lot. So that I learn everything about video technology that is to be learnt.


So please suggest me something new that I can try on DVDs.

You want to learn and try something new, try DVD to DVD. There are many paths to follow here from IfoEdit to Scenarist using various demuxers, (re)encoders, remuxers, etc.

If you want to experiment, learn how to encode your DivX movies with just Vdub and not Gknot. You will learn alot about the filters Vdub has built in. You also need to learn how to write an Avisynth Script so that you can load it into Vdub. Also have you read some of the more complicated explinations on IVTC and Field Operations? Those are a good read. After you master Divx 5, time to move onto Xvid and using Ogg Vorbis audio. The only way to use Ogg is to use the new OGM format which is alot of fun. Thats just Divx, there is also MPEG2, RealVideo, Windows Media 9.

hey guys,

thanks a lot for the valuable suggestions, i will dip into some DVD to DVD or SVCD( i dont really feel the need to waste 600MB extra to get the same quality as Divx but still will do it for the heck of it)

Then I will definitely get into vdub and filters. I did have a look at the .avs file though and realised that Gknot was creating a script file for vdub, with a Unix like scripting language (# for comments)
Will read more into that too.

Any more suggestions. Hope we can create some sort of a roadmap for a newbie to follow.

Sound like a good idea, but I wouldn't know where to start as im still a newb too. Well at least compared to our great Admin Staff. ;)

Oh and if you want a challenge try encoding anime like Evangelion and Trigun. If you do, you'll see why they are a challenge.

One mans newb is another mans expert. One person can't know everything about anything. But each one has an area of expertise. Each one is capable of valid ideas and input. To be honest in a field such as this there are no real experts. It changes so fast we are perpetual newbs. 3 years ago I was using MSMPEG4v2 or Divx3 with flask and I was happy. Then I tried Vidomi. Then frameserving with VFAPI and Virtualdub. Then frameserving with AVIsynth, gordian knot, and Virtualdub. Now I just use Avisynth and Virtualdub. Tomorrow who knows. But if it gives better quality and is a portable solution I am there.

It would not be mixed frame rate content would it? IIRC both series made little or no use of CG content. Bebop on the other hand is chock full of it. I am in the process of ripping and encoding my Ranma 1/2 Season 1 DVD set myself. Unfortunatly by the time they got around to making the DVD the masters had degraded. That and it looks like VIZ did a less than stellar transfer job. Still with IVTC and Xvid you hardly notice any glitches while watching. But even with IVTC and decimate there are still slight ghosting errors on odd frames. :|
