Learned Colleagues:

Add this one to the "great mysteries of compatibility" list...I'm sure that the Jedi Masters out there will figure this out.

1. Take a DVD < 4.7 GB and rip using either Decrypter or SmartRipper where you ripped/backed up ALL the files on the DVD.

2. Burn at 1X onto media that does work in Sony set top player using either Prassi or Nero

3. Sony set top player willl not read the DVD...Cannot Play This Disc error shows up. Other set top player (Daewoo) works fine, as well as any computer software player.

Now...

1. Take same DVD and go through the DVD2AVI/CCE/DVDMaestro loop after ripping

2. Use same media brand as above and burn with either Prassi or Nero

3. Sony set top player WILL READ the DVD.

I've also noticed that other VOB/IFO assembling programs like Pinnacle Express for my home video provides output that reads fine in the Sony.

Can someone please explain?

Could this be a function of using the region free options on the rippers?

Is there something in the original IFO files that is missing or is there someting added in the DVDMaestro assembled IFO files that helps the compatibility?

Any help will be appreciated...

Zep

try this: rip in ISO mode in DVDDecrypter and burn the ISO again (1x speed) using DVD Decrypter.

Maybe you have to do a sector correction in IfoEdit prior to burning your DVD-5 files again. Personally I always used the method described above for DVD-5s and I've never had a problem. Using file mode for DVD-5s seems an unnecessary risk to me.

By the looks of things, you are burning just the file set:

"2. Burn at 1X onto media that does work in Sony set top player using either Prassi or Nero"

However for best compatiility I recomend creating an image file before the burning process.

However as Doom9 said, for DVD-5 movies, why not just copy in iso mode instead of file mode.

By default DVD decrypter remove all P-ups.
This is not good for several menus, like those with button over video or picture slideshow.
I recommend to keep P-ups and only remove audio, sub change in the main movie.

This is perhaps a reason to your problem

I was skeptical since the logic was hazy, but went ahead and tried the ISO Read/Write route and it did work!! Now I'm wondering why, but I'm not that concerned with the metaphysics of the situation.

Regardless of whether or not it did work for my Sony, the ISO Read/Write combo is quicker than the standard backing up to HDD and the writing combo so this is definitely the method of choice!

Thanks Doom9!!!
