View Full Version : X(S)VCD problems with PHILIPS machines (Hick-Ups)

Hello,
A friend has a Philips DVD-723, my parents have a DVD-701 (both not patched / upgraded)
I do have 100s of movies on XVCD and XSVCD. They play on my own DVD player (Apex600 / Hiteker 600, hacked upto the limits) without a problem, but they always give problems on Philips machines.
I know not all DVD-players support XVCD and/or XSVCD but having this shouldn't be a problem with those Philips machines.
On both Philips machines movies give the same problem; HICK-UPs.
Yesterday I tried a XSVCD on the 723 with this specifications;
MPEG2 - CBR
480x576 / 25 fps
VideoBitrate 2650
Audio: 44.1 kHz / 224 kbps STEREO
Used CDR's are perfect ones (Taiyo Yuden)
Used software:
CinemaCraft Encoder to encode
TMPGenc MPEGTools to merge & cut
VCDEasy to master BIN/CUE xSVCD files
CDRWin to burn the image files
So then the playing begins.....
Disc in DVDplayer ;-) hit the play button ;-)
There it starts playing...but....within seconds the first hick-up...goes on playing some seconds...hickup.....goes on playing some seconds....hickup...etc etc....
(With Hickup I mean, the movie freezes about a second and goes on after that.)
Does anyone know how to solve this ?
Is it the audio rate ?
The video rate doesn't seem to be too high ?
Might a firmware upgrade be the solution (for sure?) ?
Don't need the region free / Macrovision / RCE hacks... just being able to play XVCD and XSVCD. So another workaround without touching the firmware would even be better ;-)

Philips players don't care about video resolution on svcd's. If you have mpeg-1 sources you need to mux them to svcd with bbmpeg. Players also doesn't like too high bitrates. 2650 video + 224 audio is bigger than svcd-spec(2650 max.). As I said resolution doesn't matter if muxing and burning as svcd (eben mpeg-1 works in svcd).

Thanx. In the meantime I also found out that "magical" formula for Philips ( video+audio <2650 ) for (X)SVCD
What do you mean btw with muxing them to mpeg2 if it's a mpeg1 ?
Do you mean that when it's a XVCD/MPEG1 with a rate over 1150/224 (=1374) then a Philips player won't accept it either ? And so remuxing it to (X)SVCD/MPEG2 solves this ?
So with xVCD/MPEG1 the limit (for Philips) is set to 1374 ?
Giving a rule like;
In case of a PHILIPS DVD-player
(X)SVCD / MPEG2 = max. 2650
(X)VCD / MPEG1 = max. 1374

I am not sure is it the bitrate or the resolution in xvcd's which doesn't work. I noticed that my 727 plays even 704*576 mpeg-1 from svcd.

Why 704x576 ? I've seen people using that, but I always use 720x576. Is that wrong or also an option ?

704x576 is also dvd compliant. You can use it for XVCD. But I'll not recommend it except you want to play your dvd-rips on dvd-players which cannt play SVCDs. Generally the dvd players produced by Philips are very, very bad for playing back the (X)SVCDs which are common in the szene. So sell it and never buy it in the future.

Thanx !
I know about those PHILIPS that's why I didn't buy it. (I reffered to a friend and my parents) Personally I wouldn't want any other machine then my Apex600 / Hiteker BI-600 or any other machine that fits the "One Firmware For All" (Sampo reworked firmware) It plays all discs you put in it, even raw VOB (i.e. just 1 VOB file on CDR), MPEG or JPEG files, MiniDVD, MaxiCD, VCD, XVCD, CVD, SVCD, XSVCD, CDDA etc...
All it misses is capability to play CD+G, CD-I, SACD, DivX. ;-))

Senior Member Adam has said his Apex dvd player cannt correctly play the SVCDs which are over 40min long, after 40min you'll get asyncron of audio on SVCDs. Have you tested this on your player?
There are a few features those are (very) rarely supported:
1. MP3-Tags v1/v2
2. MP3 long file name, directory-play and album-play
3. menu support for MP3 songs
4. CD-Text for Audio CD (a new YAMAHA player has this but for 300$)
A few years ago I've made many audio CD with CD-Text(song title and artist) but there is no HiFi equipment except 2 SONY Player(but very, very dear) support it. Also there is no software player do that - it should be easier to implement it in a windows application! But no one did it!!! Every one implement the function to get the info form internet/CDDB. But my CDs are self-compilations, not in internet!
5. Cursor/pointer/active-choice support for (S)VCDs
According to (S)VCD standard you can define "hot points(area)" on vcd menu to make selection via. mouse/pointer etc. So in software player PowerDVD/WinDVD you can do it but on standalone there is no mouse and the arrow-keys are inactive. It should be easier to implement(activate) the arrow keys! But no one did it!!!
P.S.: I've made many VCD/SVCDs with the mouse support but I cannt activate this function on dvd players.

Yes.. I have many (x)SVCD's that go over 40 minutes.
When I made them myself (XMPeg / VCDEasy / CDRWin) I never get a-sychronity. I got some xSVCD's after a trade that were done with Nero and some are really pretty messed up. But that's Nero's problem not the Apex.
There are a few features those are (very) rarely supported:
1. MP3-Tags v1/v2
okay... the "apex / one firmware for all" misses that too/
2. MP3 long file name, directory-play and album-play
24 caracters
Shuffle play, random play in directory INCLUDING the sub directories.
3. menu support for MP3 songs
?????

Okay... another optional implementation for the Obne Firmware for All
Coincidentally I have such a Sony CD player. But the whole CD-Text concept is doomed. I bought the player about 5 years ago, I own over 700 OFFICIAL Audio-CDs (no CDR). And sofar just 3 of them contain CD-Text.

Never experimented with that.
If you want more info about the One Firmware for All check;

This sublime firmware fits on a whole lot of different players.

I have a Mustek DVD-560 which can play also almost all formats - but without the need to patch anyway. The "one firmware for all" does not support it. So what it connt do today, it will also not do in the future. Pity.3. menu support for MP3 songsI meen you may put some jpg/bmp file on mp3-cd for navigation menu just like vcd. There is no specification for it. But it's time to do it.But the whole CD-Text concept is doomed. I bought the player about 5 years ago, I own over 700 OFFICIAL Audio-CDs (no CDR). And sofar just 3 of them contain CD-TextThe concept is doomed only for CD-Players! On CD-Player you get only tiny display(LEDs)/less info and cannot navigate form title to title, from artist to artist. But with DVD-Player you have all the possibility to do that, finaly!(big diplay, more info/navigation possible etc...) It's a new chance for CD-Text.Never experimented with that(Pointer on VCD).I'm very sure there is no one dvd player in the world can do it. Because the very most of developers dont even know it and the rest think it is not necessary: very, very few VCDs and no SVCD except my compilations in the world have been authored for that. In fat it is easy to realize it: just like the CD-i player for 8-9 yeares ago, on which you can play games like golf.
