View Full Version : to doom9: should you add a real video forum?

after your test and the good results of real video, maybe you should create a real video forum... what do you think?

anyone that knows me knows im a fan of real media. i like it as a format for conversion to a small, quickly transferable, media format. for archiving dvds its not bad... imo the other alternatives are still better. having said that.. although there is a rising use of real media for archive purposes, imho there isnt enough interest to warrant a whole forum

IMHO a Real forum would be a very good idea. It definitely has it's place alongside DivX and XviD.

Good, I am glad there are many of us who support the idea...

I prefer XviD plus mp3 or ogg to any Real format. The latter's usefulness is limited to its own players which keep getting more intrusive day after day IMHO.
Don't let me discourage you from using real. I'm more into
converting anything I have in real format into XviD using
the TINRA utility.

Come on don't yell at me. I mean, I posted and I got 2 positive answers... What's the cost anyway... Some KBs?

it's more a matter of cluttering up the forums. I don't like forums that are not used a lot.

Snollygoster
2nd December 2002, 15:41
Well, give it a try, and if it won't work move all the threads back to New A/V and shut the new forum down...

RadicalEd

I like Real's codecs a lot myself, but it is true, there aren't a whole lot of threads about RealMedia in the New A/V formats. Those who do use it to back up are probably still a minority compared to divx & xvid.
I'm just waiting for someone to come up with some l33t tools using the new opensource stuff (curse my being a first year BASIC student)
I still think realvideo in ogm would be sweet

I agree with Snollygoster a Real forum would be a very good idea. Just to know how to "real optimize".
Here, one vote

i aggrees too!! A lot of people uses Real for Anime...... as one of the developer saids Helix Producers will get open source in Mid December and Rv9 will gather momentum..... I am sure a lot of people are interested.

Or how about a Anime forum?? :D

I support it, and if created, will be there to answer questions.

BTW: you can also get in touch with Real developers regarding Helix open source issues on IRC:

its been suggested a bunch of times... and it would be really cool it also has been deemed to be in conflict of existing forums (and that the anime crow is not a very large but very loud one). Anime encoding includes many different subjects for which there currently are forums and it would lead to information being spread over more forums instead of less.

OK.... that is quite true... no anime forum... but REAl forum!!!!

All of my rips/encodes are done with DivX and Xvid. I was aware of other codecs out there but never really bothered until I read this excerpt from the Chosen One's codec shootout:
RV9 was the big surprise in this test. Until now WMV7, WMV8, RealVideo and the VPx series of codecs have not been able to get even close to the leading pack and I was really skeptical about RealVideo9. While not showing any particular surprises in the Matrix test it managed to show a very good performance in the SPR test.
What got my attention was the last statement. Now everyone and his grandma would agree that SPR would have to be one of the baddest a** movie when it comes to compression. And being but just a mere 'insignificant adherent' to the wisened words of zee great one, I decided to give RV9 a try with a couple of movies. The results I got were very good but not that great. But my opinion doesn't really matter. My point is that the 2 current popular biggies are where they are now technically mostly through the extensive and popular support of the tweaking community and very talented coders/individuals (especially the X(vid)-men).So for what it's worth I think RV9 deserves a niche of its own for it to develop, because there's just not enough tools to support it like DivX and Xvid. And in the eternal quest for quality, the more options the merrier. So 1 vote here. :)

Someone mentioned I must be reading these forums for feedback.. and in fact that's part of the reason. Good feedback is always nice, but constructive negative feedback is in fact even better. That gives us a chance to fix problems people are having.

I'd be curious to know which movies, tools, and settings you used when the results were not that great? The examples I have seen myself, were compressed with AutoRV9 and the latest producer. These all looked pretty amazing, with the exception of Big Blue, where the source was very grainy, and the right pre-filters (a topic on which you are the experts) had not been used.

(I guess a discussion on RV9 encoding does not belong in this forum though).

ok ya I withdraw my previous post, my vote goes to a RV forum

:)It was of course just a subjective babbling on my part.'Not that great' to me actually meant, in this case, descriptive of the whole end-product I want, ie: sharper image (I find RV9 results a little too soft),AC3 audio support ( I always use AC3 for my encodes),and I just plain suck on text-based editors :).I used AutoRV9 btw, and the Producer version bundled with it. But I have noticed that somehow RV9 gives me richer color and contrast though, and that is the one kick-a** quality that struck me. Its just the bluriness and softness though...oh well...babble babble (yadah yadah..):)

But I guess you're right, we're not in the right forum for this subject.

Really? :) I wouldn't mind if the taliban firing squad does it.
You heard about their firing squad, haven't you?

iwod
8th December 2002, 19:53
Why should they be shot?? Everybody have their freedom to choose which codec they like and want. I must admit RV9 is not perfect but it does do well enough currently. After all my miss conception of RV9 has mostly been answered RV9 now looks to me very good.

Anyway, RV9 is here too stay.......

( Can one person have two vote... :D )

I think it deserve to have its own forum.

Well, I'm no stranger to subjectivity and biased views. Everybody's got their own opinions. I can be subjective too as well as the next guy. On the subject of encoding, I still use DivX and Xvid but that doesn't preclude my right to say what I think and feel about my own observation on RV9. People can say whatever they want towards those who express appreciation on things they loathe. That's my own view anyway within the context of our perceived civilized interaction. He can say we deserved to be shot for expressing positive opinions on Real...he can shout it out till the cows come home. But I can also say
that RV9 has a clear potential for standing out among the current crop of popular codecs. (And that, my friend Cofferscuffs, is your cue for another retaliatory shot :), which is always welcome).

(BTW, the reason why I think the taliban firing squad is cool is because they stand around in a circle.)

any news?? a RV forum??

I've some time testing rv9 and comparing it to DivX and my conclusion is that realmedia is only good for low bitrates and should never be used for DVD encoding (obviously no-duh, but I was bored and wanted to compare the quality for myself). Using realmedia is also not so practical since the format isn't editable through most freeware or opensource applications out there. I can now see why copywrighters use it. rv9 would be indeed a better choice over divx and xvid to encode a one cd rip of saving private ryan.

I have to respectfully disagree with this, as I have seen a large number of demostrations of RV9 at high bitrates, also compared to other codecs. I do not, however, mean to doubt your conclusion, but I do suspect there may be a problem somewhere in the encoding or playback chain. Please see the thread "RealVideo 9 Information" thread over in "New A/V Formats" for encoding recommendations, and in case you would like to provide feedback such that your data may be reproduced.

This is true. RealMedia was not designed as an editable format, and even though 'rmeditor' can do basic editing on .rm file, I admit it is somewhat limited. AutoRV9 though, uses it very well, for its automated features (splitting, dual quality encoding).

No news that I have heard of, but I do understand the concern over having forums with too little traffic. On the other hand, there are separate forums for various flavors of the same basic technology, MPEG-4, while RV9 is entirely new technology.

There are quite a few RV9 posts, but the "New A/V Forum" handles them pretty well ;) I created a "RealVideo 9 Information" thread over there, which I wonder if could be made sticky. That would have been helpful, I think.

I'm considering a separate forum but it will have to live up to my # of post expectations. As you may recall there used to be many DivX3 forums, now we're down to one which also handles DivX4 encoding so it's really a matter of traffic/popularity... asking for it alone doesn't do the job.
Now as a first step I've made that thread a sticky.
