Just received an email from Derrow that states he will cease all development on his current products and only work for 321 from now on.

I find this rather disappointing. Existing DVDSplit customers get a free copy of DVDXCOPY (not quite sure how that is going to work).

Unfortunately it would appear to me that the latest copy of DVDXCOPY continues to cause a lot of headaches, doesn't burn, doesn't even give you the opportunity to burn yourself.

I can't blame him for finally making some money off his profound knowledge. But having to screw around with a 100,- product (which, no doubt, will be substantially more expensive with the upcoming Platinum edition) with a fraction of the features is disenchanting.

sniff, sniff

I won't mind if he is on the track to include all of Ifoedit's functions in DVDXcopy, but it would suck if he doesn't make DVDXcopy better than it is.

sad, very sad.
I was so excited after reading that remuxing with cce encodet streams is near.
dvdxcopy is almost useless to me. I can't see the sense of splitting movies on two disk (imho).

Hello to all,

I can understand that Derrow wants to earn some mony with the exstensive knowlege he has.
And I think we all could see this comming, it all was almost to good to be true.
I don't really have the need for a program such as DVDXCOPY and Ifoedit and Vobedit are just more than enough for me.
But, to be honest to ya all, I can't blame him.
Maybe he can earn enough to stop his current job and focus on everything that has something to do with DVD backup.
I can also understand (if this is true) that if 3,2,1 Studios offerd him a contract they wanna to stop the development of Ifo- Vob-edit.
You simply can't compete with a product that's freeware while your own product almost cost $100,- and does almost the same.
Anyhow, i'am very, very sad to see it ending.
IDEE: Ask Derrow to hand over the source codes to the Doom9 team, so that they can develop it futher ?
But you can also check out the CloneCD web-site.
They are also developing CloneDVD and I think that will also be a DVD Splitter.
The CloneCD team has proved in the past that they can put a great product on the market and I hope CloneDVD will be as good as CloneCD.
It's not there yet, but the web-site states: Comming Soon
You can check it out for yourself here. (http://www.elby.ch/english/products/clone_dvd/index.html)
Best regards,

Kenwood

Derrow,

I wish you all the best in future ventures...Your Ifoedit was a great program for everyone and your program will be greatly missed!

Please can I still contribute to your development( Read E-Mail i have sent you.)

Again! All the best!

What I have stopped now, is the development on DVDSplit and DVDBurn!
I also had to remove it from sale.
It also wouldn't make sense to develop two products with almost the same functionality, and to compete with 321Studios.

By stopping the development on this tools, there was a problem with the people they already payed for it.
Of course, it would be mean, and it is not my style to disappoint people.
So Robert H. Moore from 321Studios made me the great offer to give DVDXCopy for free to all who had purchased DVDSplit and DVDBurn.

I'm really happy about that, cause though I don't need to fool my people.

As for the development of IfoEdit and VobEdit, I can't tell you yet, what will be. I'm damn busy right now.
But they will stay free, and will remain on my site for download. :-)

Hello Derrow,

Just received you e-mail a few minutes ago.
It's clear, you won't stop the development of Ifo- and Vob-edit.
For all, to get the rumours out of the air, here is Derrows reply:

I just stop development on DVDSplit and DVDBurn.
I also can't sell this tools anymore.

But my other baby's will be developed further, as soon
as I get some free time.

Derrow

Thanks for the fast respons Derrow !!!
You've took something of my chest (lol) :D
I also want to contribute/donate something to you.
I don't have a credit card, and my current card won't be accepted by pay-pal.
Asked you twice in a e-mail if there is a other way to donate something for the hard work you put into Ifo- Vob-edit.
Is there ???
Best regards and greetz,

Kenwood

Thank you all for your wishes!
That makes me really happy.

Please don't treat me that bad, if I don't have the time right now to continue my work on IfoEdit and VobEdit.
But this is the chance of my life, and I must take the chance, or I might regret it forever.

At least I'm now working the entire Day on DVD backup stuff.
So it can become just better.

Derrow, we all like free tools (don't we all), but I wouldn't mind if my $99 was put to good use on DVDXCopy to include all the functionality of IFOEdit, but in an easier to use package.

Will you be adding more "Ifoedit" stuff to DVDXCopy? Having one tool do everything is worth the money paid.

I asked Derrow how those of us who bought DVDSplit will get this free copy of DVDXCopy. He said to download the program from the 321 website and we will get an authentication key from 321 sometime this week.

Personally I think it must be great for you to have this great oppotunity to earn a living doing what you love.

It's just a shame it's working on an app that splits dvd9's

There are some great apps that are in beta stage that will completely re-encode & author dvd's to fit on just one dvd. Which is what I think most people want, although not eveyone obviously.

These apps are highly dependant on ifoedit & I'd hate to see these apps hindered by you not having the time to develope it further.

But as I said before, you have a great oppotunity to earn a living from what you love & I cant fault you decision. You have already given sooo much to the scene

Just my 2cents.

I wish you all the best :D

Will you be adding more "Ifoedit" stuff to DVDXCopy? Having one tool do everything is worth the money paid. I suppose if you tell that to anybody reauthoring multi PGC titles using Scenarist or Maestro he'll immediately tell you "can't be done". Splitting a DVD-9 to 2 DVD-5s is one thing, basically you select a splitpoint, distribute the extras over the two discs and you're done. But once you start re-encoding, ouch. Can you say multi PGCs, dummy audio tracks, setting up CCE projects for every PGC separately (extras normally require quite different settings from the main movie), and then intelligently put that back together. Imagine just having to select a bitrate for every PGC.. with most titles you'd just go nuts. Plus then there are those that have a lot of dummy PGCs. I think it's pretty much impossible to have an all powerful KISS application - IfoEdit could be made somewhat easier but there are hard limits imposed by the sheer mass of options.

These apps are highly dependant on ifoedit & I'd hate to see these apps hindered by you not having the time to develope it further.
my feelings exactly. I imagine IfoEdit could be used as a scenarist replacement for re-authoring purposes in 2 or 3 versions but now the bugs keep piling up and there's nobody to reduce that pile again :(

Having just backed up Gosford Park yesterday with IfoEdit and Rempeg the movies (75%) and the extras (50%) I wanted to keep, everything's there as far as I can tell...apart from the quality of the reencodes.
Maybe it would be more useful to improve the quality of Rempeg at low bitrates (I think it's ok at 3mbps+) if that's at all possible.

2nd December 2002, 18:35
ReMPEG2 development has long since ceased and repeated efforts by various people have failed. Plus, it would be really hard to bring rempeg even close to CCE - implementing authoring is the right way to go imho.

bumblebe
2nd December 2002, 18:40
yeah you're right, it's just that REMPeg2 is just such a "natural" solution to reduce the size of a DVD. I wasn't aware others had tried to improve it. Are there threads on the board?
You think it's the concept behaind it that's "wrong" ?
Honestly though at 3mbps+ it's rather decent IMHO.

It is sad to hear that Derrow won't be able to work on his free software anymore... :( But, Derrow, I wish you the best with your efforts at 321 Studios! You've been great for this community and I'm sure that will continue.

For those looking for an easier re-encoding solution, you could check out my program, ReDVD (http://tyris.doesntexist.com/redvd/)! (I'm trying hard not to make this a shameless plug...) The authoring support isn't there yet, but I'm getting pretty close. Next version will add subtitle support. Try to ignore the terrible web site design!

But, to get back on topic... Good luck Derrow! We're all waiting to see the magic you can work with DVDXCopy! ;)

Derrow,

Two things..

First - Im glad you took/recieved an opprotunity to do what you want, nothing more in this world better than having a job you both enjoy and can make a living at.

Second - The fact that you even put forth the effort to take care of the people that purchased dvdsplit, speaks on how good of a person you are. You can easily have disappeard from the net and moved on your merry way but you didnt. I can only say you are a good person, and I appreciate that.

I have no clue on 321 studios and their products at all, I got into this and ifoedit was there and i was pointed to it . and I never looked back. I would have purchased 321's product just on the fact that you are there and working on it. The fact that I get a free copy is only icing on the cake, if its any good I will even purchase whatever upgrades, platinum editions whatever they have.. DVD9 to 5 is what I do, so it works for me well.

Derrow stay on the board here, As time goes by maybe you can change this forum to 321 something or another and keep in touch with your fans, and of course get bombarded with questions and request for personal help... LOL..

Thanks

I just hope there is a special offer for members of Doom9. :)

i just want to wish derrow the best aswell and hope that one day he does get back to improving and fixing the bugs in ifoedit. if you do ever decide that you wont do anymore then please dont let it go the way of rempeg2, please hand it to someone else to continue.
as for 321studios, just wish you had chosen someone else to work for. i do not and never will like their conduct and deception with dvdcopyplus. which is ongoing and well documented for anyone who has been living in a cave.
finally dvdxcopy is a commercial product with its own forum, why support them here ?

@Sephan: You obviously don't know what parasites 321Studios are. Just make a search on VCDHelps forum if you wanna know. I for one think that Derrow, like a lot of other people, will be screwed by them. They've proven to have no scrouples what so ever. And I just don't get why Derrow ever wanted to work for a company who made their forune on selling freeware (freeware which they claimed were their own software, but what infact just were Smartripper, DVDx and VCDEasy. They had just but to ask thedevelopers but they didn't). Of course, when that got known they changed their homepage, but the fact they tried to conceal it says everything.

Good luck Derrow and thank you for all of your hard work. We all greatly appreciate ifoedit and vobedit and the probably hundreds of hours you have given to the community. I wish you great luck in your future endevors but ask, plead, for one thing. Please Derrow, do not let your hard work just die. These are powerful programs that are just a glimmer of their possible potential. Open source them and let the community continue in the tradition of the work you did on them. I understand the amount of work and effort you have put into "raising them" but now may be the time to let your "children" leave your hands so you can focus on your current projects but let them continue to grow and improve. I would suggest and LGPL so that any work done to the source code would have to be released, but any project that it is integrated to would not have to go open source. Since you are working for a competing comercial venture, I might also suggest a mLGPL (modified LGPL) so that it could not be included in a for profit project.

Again thank you for your work Derrow, but please open source your projects.

Derrow, I know you are very busy but a reply would be greatly appreciated. The tools you made have been a focus of this community. Now it looks like the may be dead and replaced by the much less functional DVDxcopy. I would gladly pay you a reasonable price for a powerful version of ifoedit that was easy to use (BTW, $100 is not reasonable) but since that will not be now, please open source your projects.

Thank you.

Yes it seems ifoedit is (currently) our only hope for an "easy" full backup to DVD5 with Tmpeg/CCE/Rempeg transcoding.
Of course if it never materializes people will be forced to buy solutions with DVDxCopy...if it incorporates transcoding at some point, it might be ok, but that seems unlikely since it would bump up the price even more, unless they use Rempeg of course...

Unfortunatly I dont think DVDxcopy will ever have the functionality that I want. I just want to get rid of all the crap on my DVDs so I can pop them into my DVD player and watch the movie. If I hit the menu, then it takes me to the menu and I can choose a chapter. DVDxcopy will never be anything more than a 1:1 backup that inserts MORE CRAP(aka more warnings).

Don't worry about IfoEdit.
Cause I'm damn busy right now with DVDXCopy, I don't have the time to develop IfoEdit at the moment.

So see it just as a break, but not as complete development stop.

And thank you all for all the wishes! I really appreciate that.
Indeed this is right now the chance of my life, and I've got to catch that :D

Good to hear ifoedit isnt dead Derrow. While I think this may be a fine opportunity for you, I would imagine that you are the entire brains behind the operation at this point and instead of making there software work you would have been much better off making your own software and marketing that.

I still think you should open source, but they are your babies and its only my opinion...

GOOD LUCK and we all hope to see you back here soon (and look forward to future advances in ifoedit)

I agree with Gnutellafan. There is a reason why Derrow is working with 321Studios. He has something they need, I personally think Derrow should start creating his own 'DVDXCOPY' so to speak and sell that. There would be no competition.

Let's all hope that Derrow is making a boat load of moola with his efforts at 321. Many of us have a bad taste about the business practives used at 321, but have great faith in Derrow. Derrow should get his righful share of the huge profits that DVDXCopy will surely generate.

I sincerely hope that Derrow's contract with 321 included a fairly high percentage of all profits generated by DVDXcopy. We all know that Derrow will make the product work as advertized, something that 321's original programmers had not been able to do.

Also, we can all hope that Derrow will eventually find the time to return to IFOEdit and not only fix the bugs, but also increase its capabilities. Even with the wealth I hope he acheives with 321, I hope his heart lies in his first baby, IFOEdit, and that he will continue to improve that firstborn's abilities.

I don't want to use 2 DVD's to copy a dual layer commercial DVD. I want a single DVD that contains the entire movie. I don't want even more piracy notices that I already have, and would prefer to have none. IFOEdit is the main tool that allows me to achieve that.

Good luck Derrow, and please don't forget your first love!!

@roach76

You right about that Derrow should make his own DVDSplit/Burn program (which he was developing).....and sell this program for less than $100 which DVDXCopy costs at the moment.....have you seen the forum on DVDXCopy ???? all the problems customers have...for a product of $100....they should be a same of themselve....

Sure that they are in a developing stage....but already then ask $100 for a program that doesn't do the job....:(

Jezus what people do (write) to get him back........:D

Hi there,
I really like IfoEdit, because it's the only program which can do the job. I don't mind paying for software which is good, i also payed for ifoedit. So after a while i will buy DVDXCOPY too, just because Derrow is working on it and it will be a good program.

Maybe you can post something about the development of DVDXCOPY....

Derrow, you made the right decision !
Good luck and all the best in your new job.

Hi Derrow,

first of all thanks alot for all your work in ifoedit. It's amazing how far it came, and all for free - wow :D

I have one final request. I can't tell how complicated it is, but it obviously already was on your todo-list for ifoedit: I'd ask for the opportunity to add several movies to one DVD. Nothing fancy, no menus or stuff, just the ability to add multiple PGCs chained one after another. This would be SO great to back up multiple smaller clips to one DVD.

Personally, even though I'd love this to be part of the (for now) final free ifoedit suite, I personally would have no problem shelling out a few bucks for anything like it, because I know of no other way of doing this so far. Is there any chance that either ifoedit or a different commercial tool from you will offer this option?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Derrow for all the work you have done , I could never have got this far without your tools Ifoedit and vobedit, lets hope you have spare time (but I dont Think so at this moment )to keep development of both going :D :D :D
