In some discussions here I have read about a possibility to put 5.1 sound in (s)vcd sound-tracks.

For TMPG there exist templates to put 3 hours of CD quality music on one VCD (mp2 compressed).

Is it possible to combine the two above mentioned techniques to create a 5.1 music VCD.

PS: There have been discussions here about creating DD-AUDIO CD's but all my attempts to create them failed. My DVD player refuses to play them. However, it plays VCD's without problems.

VCDs only support mpeg1 audio layer II audio, which by definition is limited to 2 channels. There is no way to make a compliant VCD with 5.1 channels.

SVCD does support multichannel mpeg audio and yes if you used the methods in that template of yours then you could fit a great deal of content on one disk and still have the 5.1 channels. Unfortunately very few dvd player/reciever combinations support MC audio in a SVCD.

All philips players/receivers support it.(at least in europe)

though there are a lot more DVD players capable of playing DVD±Rs than SVCDs with 5.1 sound (well... they will all play it, but except for a few models only with 2.0 downmixed sound). With DVD±R prices steadily dropping I tend to think that if you want 5.1 audio you should better invest into recordable DVDs.

BTW, player alone usually won't do it unless it has an integrated mpeg2 multichannel decoder (most players don't), your receiver will have to be able to handle the format (or if you have an integrated decoder in the player you have to use the analogue 5.1 output to connect your player to your receiver).

Interesting... My philips 722 allows to convert mpeg-audio to pcm when using s/pdif. I don't have a receiver so I don't know does it support multichannel also.

This theme has been discussed many, many, and many times in this forum. Please do a search before post. A overview/guide/software for creating the 5.1 audio and a dadabase for knowing compatible equipments(decoder/dvd-player) can be found at:
