I've had these video files for a long time, but I guess I haven't watched some of them since the last time I reinstalled windows. The ones I encoded with DivX 5.0.2 work fine, but there are about 8 I got from other people that don't work.

I've tried installing the Defiler Pack and the Nimo codec pack, but it didn't help.

When I try to open the first episode, I get:
Sasami2k just freezes
Windows Media Player doesn't play and also gives me the screen that it displays when it normally just plays audio (visualizations and all that)
mplayer2 crashes with the message: The instruction at "0x09ce3b86" referenced memory at "0xe0483edb". The memory could not be "read".
RealPlayer locks up.

What's the deal?? Is there something I can do to fix this? They all used to play just fine...

I don't know what your problem is, but you might try installing and using GSpot (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Editing/gspot20.zip). It will examine an .avi file, tell you the codecs used for audio and video, let you know if they are installed, and let you know if it could render them with DirectX.
