Ok guys, I don't know about you guys but I backup alot of my expensive anime series. Most of which are order from HK and are NTSC INTERLACE. One series that I just finish is Rurouni Kenshin and the current one I'm working on is Fushigi Yugi: The Mysterious play. I'm wondering if you guys have any problems with subtitles when doing anime, especially NTSC/Interlace one's. This is how I back my animes up.
1.) dvd decrypter---> rip the whole cd to HD
2.) DVD2AVI ---> video :field operation--->None. audio: dolby digital-->demux all.
3.) avisynth with the following entries in my avs file.
LoadPlugin("C:\mpeg2dec\mpeg2dec.dll")
LoadPlugin("c:\mpeg2dec\decomb.dll")
LoadPlugin("c:\mpeg2dec\IVTC.dll")
mpeg2source("D:\fy.d2v")
FieldDeinterlace()
ResampleAudio(44100)
4.)CCE: single pass (0-8000 on min-max because the disc is 3:15mins long; check by add sequence end code, progressive frame, linear quant, zigzag, and dvd compliant. quality at 5). video output will be fy.m2v
5.)pulldown as folllow:
pulldown fy.m2v fy-drop.m2v -nopulldown -drop_frame true
6.)subrip 1.13 : maestro, fps 30.0, drop frame
chapter xtractor: maestro
7.)Maestro: import all assets and import chp and subs. (followed doom9 guide from here)
Ok everything works well, but i'm getting subtitle problems. For Rurouni Kenshin my subtitles would blink in and out real quick occasionally or some of them are missing. Fushigi Yugi, my subtitles are falling behind my video and audio. I had to use subrip to even out my subtitles so everything is ok now.
I was wondering if there's a better way to doing this and is there a better way to estimate the subtitle sync time other than eye'n it?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You say you backup you expensive anime, but most are hk (cheap imports)? isn't that pretty contradictory? haw
Anyway, I've burned a few animes, and have had the same subtitle sync problems. I mentioned a workaround here.. http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38972

What authoring program do you use?
As for the Fushigi Yuugi subtitle synch problems, running it through pulldown solved my Read or Die anime subtitle synch problems.

I'm using DVD Maestro. Well I basically tried every possible pulldown to get my subs in sync. Here's the different method of pulldowns i used:
1. pulldown fy.mpv out.m2v -prog_frames p
2. pulldown fy.mpv out2.m2v -prog_frames p -drop_frame true
3. pulldown fy.mpv out3.m2v -drop_frame true
4. pulldown fy.mpv out4.m2v -nopulldown
5. pulldown fy.mpv out5.m2v -nopulldown -drop_frame true
only one that seems to work is out5.m2v, I've done most of my anime's that are interlace/NTSC that way. As for Fushigi Yugi, I found out that the subs were behind by 00:00:13:005 (took lots of experimenting), so i used subrip and adjusted my time by that much. basically it was the same for all the fushigi yugi dvd's, must be something i don't know about. I still gotta do that work around mookyking said, but haven't had the chance.

For interlaced NTSC material I use this for pulldown
C:\>pull\pulldown.exe C:\My Documents\My Music\ROD\FULLROD.m2v C:\My Documents\newmagicROD.m2v -nopulldown -drop_frame true
And that always works.
Were your subtitle slowly desynching, or did they start out unsynched from the beginning ?

LOL.. thats exactly the same pulldown i use :p
well it started out of sync... at first i thought it was because of the little intro of the company in the beginning of the dvd, but i took out that Vob ID. So that wasn't it... as i stated before it was off by -00:00:13.005 in the beginning... it didn't slowly get out of sync. once i adjusted the time in subrip all my subtitles were in sync, so i guess i'm lucky :)

Just out of curiosity, are you keeping the HK subs or the more accurate fansub scripts?
And how are you authoring it? Just plays when you pop it in, menus, etc.?
And once you're done, lemme know and maybe I'll be interested in them (I have the Suzaku LDs and want to see the rest)

I'm doing a 1 to 1 copy so whatever was on my original disc thats what it is on my backups. MENU's, Chinese subs, English subs... etc..
