hiya.

well as I'm sure ya can tell, what I'm wondering.....I have a divx file (mucky :P dvdrip) but the original resolution of it is 352x240.....typical vcd resolution

it is 2hrs 20minutes long, so I was going to just make a regular vcd of it, to fit quite nicely onto 2 80min cds. However, I was wondering if it would look best if in dvd2svcd I made it still with mpeg2 but just choosing that low resolution? so in effect making an XSVCD (or whatever you want to call it)...so would be about 70mins on each cd in mpeg2 352x240 format....would that look just as good as the vcd file or would mpeg2 format cause it to look worse under if it works less well with lower resolutions.

thanks

XSVCD at this resolution may cause playback problem - not all SVCD compliant DVD player can handle such disk.
If the movie is widescreen(2.35:1) it should possible to put up to 4 hours material on a 80min CD-R in xVCD VBR format. I've made a 1CD-rip of Lord of the Rings 1 - the Fellowship(PAL) which is 180min long. With the proper matrix/settings the movie was too short for a 80min CD-R, so I had to crop the AR to 1.85:1, put burned subtitles on it, add the long credits part to enlarge the mpeg1 file. The resault is excellent. So you shoud try to encode the movie in cce 1-pass vbr mpeg1. If the AR is 1.66:1 or higher it is possible to make a 1-CD conversion in a highly acceptable quality.

cheers.....

I remember once I accidentally made an mpeg1 at vbr and all 3 dvd players, including pc ones didn't want anything to do with them, tho I have made xvcd just at constant bitrate and a higher res no problem.....but VCD it is :P or given time I might just try an mpeg2 to see how it performs at that res on the standalone

I remember once I accidentally made an mpeg1 at vbr and all 3 dvd players, including pc ones didn't want anything to do with themThat really strange or you've made some gross mistake. The vbr mpg1 can be played back at almost every dvd-player which the cd-r supports. I've tested it on some very old VCD-Players(5-7 years old) from China/Singapore/Korea, all could play them but sometimes jerky. At DVD-Players there is nerver a problem. Even those the SVCD not supported. The support for 352x240 mpg2 is surely less than that for vbr mpg1. At least the WinDVD/PowerDVD should play them smoothly. So you should not mention the gross mistake again.
