View Full Version : Need XviD settings for Gone in 60 seconds, to compare with DivX5.02

Hey there,

I tried using XviD lost of times, but when I compared it to DivX 5.02 I always thought DivX looked better, but since every1 is saying XviD is sooo beautiful and perfect, I probably have fucked up settings, so I wanted u guys to help me out to compare the two for myself.

I want the best ripping quality (so either DivX or XviD).

Movie size (so ONLY MOVIE, no Calculate Frameoverhead or ANY audio, just the raw film data) has to be 741078 KB (724 MB)

The movie length is 01:53:07. So don't encode the credits seperately.

The resolution must be 592 x 320 (1:85)

So please post here what the best worked for u guys and if possible a picture woth the framenumber. And they guys after posting that, could u use the EXACT same frame to post?

So please post the EXACT settings u used for XviD.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. The movie is Gone in 60 Seconds, for the ones who missed it.

hrm.

*caugh caugh*

too lazy to tweak and read up the forum? No offense, but PLEASE. We're not here to give you "perfect" settings for the encodes waiting on your HDD ;P

I suggest hitting "load defaults" in your case.

First step, what are your settings?

I want the best ripping quality
Quality happens to be very subjective. What may look flawless to you may look butt ugly to someone else. So really, there is no such thing as "best" quality. As a consequence, best settings don't exist either. (No, you didn't ask for best settings, just thought I'd mention it.)

Movie size (so ONLY MOVIE, no Calculate Frameoverhead or ANY audio, just the raw film data) has to be 741078 KB (724 MB)
Why 724 mb? (Wait, let me guess: You told DivX to encode to 700 mb and it spat out a 724 mb file. That's spot-on "accuracy" for you! :D )

First of all thanks for replying.

@Koepi
I am NOT lazy, I tried it many times, but dont seen to get it right, coz DivX ALWAYS looks better with my rips. So I wonder what I am doing wrong, THEREFORE I wanted to see the results of some1 who says that XviD is better. Just to compare, coz XviD hasnt convindced me yet and I like to give it a try.
And I DID look in the forum, many many times. I know there was a rip for Gone in 60 Seconds, but cant find it.
So please try to be more helpful. Thanks.

@gldblade
Well, the Why 724 MB part?? Coz I'm making a 800 MB XCD rip, and the audio is around 70 MB, so u do the calculation. (I can overburn,and i do it very often, so a few MB doesn't matter)

My settings aren't important, coz I am satisfied with my results, but if many people are claiming that one is better than the other, I like to give them a chance too...

So please try to be helpful, I just want to see for myself what is best.

P.S. I can understand why u guys give me such replies, but now u know. So help me out please.

Well... It's not unusual for DivX (3.11 or 5) to look better than XviD. I've had some encodes look better with DivX3.11, some with 5 and some with XviD! IMHO, there's still no clear *best* codec out there.

Nemesis7
29th November 2002, 05:10
I do know that one cant say: this one is the best, screw the rest. But I am asking what codec to use, with that size, for Gone in 60 Seconds. And I guess 1 should do it better than the other, in this case.

Thnx for replying. :)

But in divx you use b-frames, qpel??

1. Test with the internal linear-curve for start, search the forum for how to set it.

2. If the result is not better use the Alt c.c, you can find some similar values in past posts.

Some time ago I made this Backup but in 2CD+2Languages so this settings will not work, but you can test it :D

I use Alt C.C at

Agression:Low
High Dist:215
Low Dist:92
Strenght:30

Also what you like more, crisp image+some blocks, soft image+no blocks?

Also you must know by now that Any movie need to be tweaked a bit, this is why XviD is better for me :o

PD, So..So.. I always use for quantizers
Imin:2
Imax:4-6
Pmin:2
Pmax:12

@Nemesis7,

Try read the iago's documentation,
download it from Nic's page :
http://nic.dnsalias.com/XviD/xvid-two-pass.zip

Read that document carefully,
and let's see the XviD's magic begin!

Thanks u guys!!

I will try it out.

Btw, do u guys know who posted that thread with 'the perfect settings' for gone in 60 sec, xvid. Couldnt find it with search.
The guy made a 1 cd rip and it looked amazing...bla bla.

But thnx!

I'm sorry. I spent months tweaking settings and reading posts here...its just BS to give someone something you spent so much time on...and a lazy mofo at that...

I just dont agree with this post being here at all :(

Kyo
30th November 2002, 05:24
@Hybrid
Keep in mind that those settings are mere tips for this movie, like all the other posts about settings, Is a way to know how the others make the things, but this is not the way to make ALL the movies...

Gone in 60 Seconds is not the perfect movie for doing the test. The movie is dark and very compressible. Why don't you try one of the harder ones out there?

Nemesis7

@Hybrid
Damn man, whats ur problem? EVERY movie is diffrent, and I just want to compare this movie with my results. And even so... ur like one of those guys who is like... "oh no I spent so much time getting this, no1 gets it but me", damn man,
...its just BS to give someone something you spent so much time on...
U probably download movies from the DivX/XviD scene, and u dont think they dont spend a lot of time doing what they do?? But nooo thats okay, isn't it?
I did not intending to react like that, but you are not being very helpful, if so just dont post. (:mad:

@kxy
True, it is not the perfect movie, but, none of em is. All diffrent, I just want to compare the two with this one. And I am sure, that somethimes DivX is better and sometimes XviD, depends on the movie I guess. But thnx for your tip.

@ The rest

Do you guys think, I should use the GMC of DivX??? Coz I will use the XviD one.

As someone said... beauty is in the eye of the beholder. people like xvid because its so tweakable. Others because its open. I happen to just like the 'look' i get with xvid, combined with its open nature.

If you have been getting good results with Divx, then use it and be merry. It wont hurt my feelings if you dont use Xvid

XviD's GMC is a proof-of-concept in it's current state, and it's buggy.
Don't use it!

@Koepi

Is GMC buggy in encoding or decoding? Can you give me more info on it's limitations?

Kyo

Like koepi said... is a proof-of-concept in it's current state...
so the problem is in the encoder and so also in the decoder...

Can you give me more info on it's limitations?
Supposedly, it will not help the encoding except for a few specialized cases. In some cases it may do more harm than good.

We have a very simple way to create GMC-ed frames, but the only use for it is to test our bitstream functions - nothing more. GMCed frames will always be bigger and will have worse quality.
I've been working on GMC for some time but the results are very poor - I could get a bit smaller filesize (2% gain max), but at the cost of PSNR, and the effect was completely gone with B-frames... and the encoding was much slower, too.
I gave up. Have better things to do ;).

Ah, and let me comment your answers to the main topic of the thread: I'm surprised. Is it REALLY so difficult to use XviD? Do we need an expert with years of experiece and weeks of computing power just to encode one movie at decent quality? That would be very very bad....

@Nemesis7: I don't encode movies, but I'd tell you: quarterpel on, max bframes 3, chroma motion estimation. h263 quant type if you need no blocks visible (better for one cd..) or mpeg quant type if you need maximum crispness (if the movie is very compressable, then you might give it a try for one cd). Motion precision 6.
Leave all other settings on their defaults (which also means: don't use altCC).
I hope that would help.
A bit of warning: those settings will produce very slow encoding. You might make it a bit faster with motion precision 5 and no chroma ME (but the slowest part is qpel for b-frames, anyway).

@syskin

thank you for this detailed information. I guess most of us were still unclear about the status of GMC, so this makes it pretty clear.
in my opinion XVID gives very good results with default settings for most movies, and with qpel and bframes resp. the combination of those makes results even better and helps out on movies that are harder to compress.
I have set a personal standard (bframes 3/150/100 + qpel + cme) and that's perfect (at least for me) for almost every movie. but I also enjoy tweaking to the max, which might take up to week(s) for a single movie (;))(of course tweaking with avisynth-filters come into play as well...)
I appreciate all your effort you're putting into xvid and really like the results !

cheers

Thnx ppl, all of you.

I will defiantely try em all out man!
But there is this problem i read (and saw) with the 25/11/02 build of Nic binaries, the B frames cant be edited (turned on) any idea how to do this, or just wait for a next build?
Or am I having the wrong stuff? if so plz gimme link, coz I triep Koepi's and Nic's, both dont enable B-frame settings. :(

Anyway, man I love this forum, no1 around me understands me man, like they dont even see the diffrence between a vcd and a dvdrip divx(xvid).... fools. Anyway, thnx!

@Nemesis7,

Try uManiac's Build, it's the latest dev. compile,

Hey ppl,

I tried some stuff, with that codec from ookzDVD, and I encoed it like

Motion Search Precision: 6
Quantiaztion Type: H.263
Max B-Frames: 3
Qpel
Chroma Motion
B-F ratio: 150
B-F offset: 100
DX50 B-VOP (tried with two rips, on and off)
Imin: 2
Imax: 4
Pmin: 2
Pmax: 10
Q matrix, some I downlaoded from the forum (matrix.txt)

Credits @ Q: 20

Anyway, in Nandub it looked good, but if I try to play it, my wmp just crahes, just like zoom player, i think i installed the newest decoder (the one that decodes qpel properly), if I should need another one, help me out.

So plz tell me what to do.

Btw XviD always plays fine on my computer.

Try using ffdshow to decode the video. That's what I use and so far it's been working great. It's on Source Forge or you can findit by searching here.

@Nemesis7,

Please try the latest Koepi's build from his web site:
http://roeder.goe.net/~koepi/

His build has a lots of bugs fixed.
Please give it try. I did try that build to encode Austin Powers in Goldmember and Men in Black 2, both result are good.

I gotta admit that XviD looks better (better=sharper/less blurrier, 4 me) (in Nandub) most of the time. So.... respect to XviD. BUT DivX looks way better than XviD when I play it on wmp. Yes I tried both without and with postprocessing/noise bla bla.
But I can't get XviD look better when playing. So I guess the XviD decoder sucks a little. I only get it to play when I select the XviD ONLY option in ffdshow. So the first 1 only.

So tell me what CAN I do?? Just wait for a good decoder like the DivX 5.02 one (although it's not perfect)? Or keep the divx encode?

Btw, shall I post my results (as *.png files)??

If you are using ffdshow filter, you might want to try Nic's standalone decoder. Ffdshow has given me strange playback in the past; switching to Nic's filter always solved these problems...

Nemesis7
5th December 2002, 04:12
I tried that one (i think) but it crashes when i try to play it, with wmp and zoomplayer. Maybe I have the wrong one, but dont think so. Can u tell me which one u used?

try BSPlayer (http://www.bsplayer.org)!

I dont know why but in my case BSPlayer gives a much better picture than wmp, mpc and zoomplayer (similar to virtualdub)!
