View Full Version : new - rare sub problem

This could only happen to me, backing movies in a language I don't speak:) :
I backed up two French movies. Asterix et Obelix: Mission Cleopatre & the Piano Teacher. Both DVDs Made in Greece, with only Greek subtitles. The first with SVCD subs, the second with perm subs. About 15% of the subs were missing, or shown "in a flash" in the final svcds, although they were ripped ok.
I pinpointed the problem on the times subs are supposed to be on screen (Duh!):

From Asterix (el1-1.sub):

.....
From The Piano Teacher (permsubs.txt):
......

3822,3822,0,152,470,el100013.bmp

4484,4582,0,120,424,el100019.bmp
........
On the original DVDs they show OK

On the SVCD subs,
Winsubmux happily muxes them reporting nothing.
Submux reports while doing it's stuff:
warning: sub on line xx has end<=start, skipping
On the perm subs, I have no clue of knowing what's going on.

I changed the times manually on both cases. And they were A LOT!!!:
From
el100150.bmp 00:13:14,15 00:13:14,15 264 94 220 420
el100151.bmp 00:13:17,07 00:13:17,07 152 46 276 468
el100152.bmp 00:13:18,91 00:13:22,62 304 94 200 420
to
el100150.bmp 00:13:14,15 00:13:17,07 264 94 220 420
el100151.bmp 00:13:17,07 00:13:18,91 152 46 276 468
el100152.bmp 00:13:18,91 00:13:22,62 304 94 200 420
etc

On the SVCD subs case, I finished the CDs manually, with Winsubmux and VCDEasy, using the XMLs D2S had made on the first try. Outcome OK.
On the Perm subs, crash recovered, waited till CCE started (permsubs.txt produced again - wrong) changed it with the corrected file, while CCE was doing it's preliminary stuff, and I hope it will turn out OK)
Using D2S 1.1.0.build 1a.
The whole (manual procedure) took me about 3 hours and two sets of coasters :)
Most of the files still on HD, sent upon request.
Another movie done between them (Pan-European edition, lotsa Audios and Subs) turned out OK.
So, it's a Greek production problem, but still a problem.
I certainly hope this is a "one (or two..) case only" because I did NOT enjoy it. :)

Would you mind trying the same dvd's in 1.0.9 B3 ?

dvd2svcd:

"...shown "in a flash" in the final svcds, although they were ripped ok..."

The movie was the "La Pianiste" PAL.
I have the same problem with the latest release 1.1.0b1a, a lot of subs are shown so fast (in a flash) that i cannot read them.
I"ve never had this problem with the previous version 1.0.9 b3.

PS: I always use permanent subtitles.

I extracted a small chapter of "Piano Teacher" and tried Perm Subs with 1.0.9b3 and 1.10pre22. Everything works fine there:

PermSubs with 1.10.build 1a:
1320,1409,0,131,424,el100001.bmp
1434,1518,0,134,424,el100002.bmp

5006,5110,0,126,424,el100005.bmp
5116,5192,0,136,424,el100006.bmp
5200,5200,0,139,424,el100007.bmp
5278,5365,0,139,424,el100008.bmp

PermSubs.txt with 1.10 pre22:
1320,1409,0,131,424,el100001.bmp
1434,1518,0,134,424,el100002.bmp
1580,1638,0,136,470,el100003.bmp

5200,5278,0,139,424,el100007.bmp
5278,5365,0,139,424,el100008.bmp

PermSubs.txt with 1.09 build 3:
1320,1409,0,131,424,el100001.bmp
1434,1518,0,134,424,el100002.bmp
1580,1638,0,136,470,el100003.bmp
1638,1730,0,126,424,el100004.bmp
5006,5110,0,126,424,el100005.bmp
5116,5192,0,136,424,el100006.bmp
5200,5277,0,139,424,el100007.bmp
5278,5365,0,139,424,el100008.bmp

I shall re-do the whole movie with 1.09. build 3 - perm subs and report when it is finished (some time tomorrow)

I just finished "The Piano Teacher"
using 1.0.9 build 3 with perm subs.
Everything went A-OK. :)
Thanks DVD2SVCD for showing me the easy workaround.

I hate to send you back to to the "drawing board" again for a "localized" problem, but I just checked the same small chapter with 1.1.0 build 1b, and the "glitch" is still there... :(

@ VILLA21: The Piano Teacher = La Pianiste, so we are talking about the same DVD. Having no other reports than yours, my suspicion, that our fellow Greek producers did (or are doing) "something" to the DVDs, is getting stronger. But now, at least we have a solution :)

Hello fellow Greek ;)

There are MANY problems with DVDs created by Greek manufacturers.

Mainly they have subtitle problems, and their picture is very
bad because their movies are not based on a digital copy, but
they are based on a normal VHS tape!!

These Greek DVD manufacturers/distributors cut costs by converting
plain old VHS tapes to DVD discs, and adding subtitles later on.

Their procedure is very bad, and the quality of the DVD is bad.

Personally, i've stopped ripping DVDs from Greek distributors if
possible, and i go to my local video club who gets movies directly
from the US, thus they are better quality (though sometimes they
may not have Greek subtitles).

PS:
not sure if this is relevant to your problem with DVD2SVCD, but
keep that in mind next time you rip a dvd.

Again the same problem with the latest 1.1.0b1b , a lot of subtitles (permanent) are shown in a flash that i cannot read them.
This time the movie is "Hable con ella" PAL.
Is there any solution around other than re-encoding the movie with the previous version 1.09.b3 ?

PS: Is it a bug related to the newer versions only?
