Frustration.

I burned an SVCD with nero, the original mpg file was fine. Now motion on screen causes a blocky pattern like a mosaic effect. Only lasts for a second or two at a time, but it makes the video look like it was shot with a Fisher Price My First Video recorder.

YUCK.

Darklord:

You might try decreasing your burn speed, this has worked for me on the few occasions that I confronted this problem.

I was only burning at 2x. Should I go to 1X?

These are my first attempts so clearly experimentation is in order.

Are you sure that Nero didn't actually re-encode the mpg file? This sure sounds like that.

Yes as a matter of fact it did.

When I clicked burn, it said that it was an incompatible format or something to that effect and asked if I would like to re-encode it.

I said yes, then waited while it re-encoded the file then burned it. (took quite a while at 2X).

So was this a bad thing then? And if so, what could I have done to prevent Nero having to re-encode the file, or done differently to get it right the first time?

theres your problem, svcds have to meet a certain standard as you probably know. Doom9's guide has most of the info. Re-encoding the file through nero will produce shoddy output and is a waste of time. Its probably better to re-encode the dvd to the proper specs. What was incompatible btw?

In case I didn't mention it, I am a rookie at making VCD's I bought a bunch of discs and am experimenting until I get it right!

I don't recall exactly what it said. As I was experimenting, I just let it go with what it wanted to do since I hadn't heard anything good or bad about Nero in this respect.

I'm going to take the same file, re-encode with TMPEGnc and try it again.

I recommend that you author the VCD with VCDEasy and then burn the created disc image with Nero. The only problem could be that your standalone DVD player might not play the disc if it's not standard compliant. Therefore you should check the compatibility with a CD-RW disc first if you are unsure. You could also check www.vcdhelp.com and the DVD players list there for some extra info.

my player will not take any cd-rw's that I have seen.

It will play Princo discs though.

I downloaded a test svcd file, burned it and put it in my standalone and it worked fine.
