View Full Version : Looking for settings for high action movie

Lecture
27th November 2002, 23:15
In the beginning of one movie, is an pursuit with a car and a motor cycle. Because there is very much action, I get no nice SVCD movie. During this action scene, I get rude pictures. I have use DVD2SVCD ver. 1.1.0 build 1a in combination with TMPGEnc Plus-2.58.44.152 (Rate Control Mode = Constant quality) further I use the standard settings of DVD2SVCD. The second time I use DVD2SVCD ver. 1.1.0 build 1 in combination with CCE SP 2.5 and the standard settings. The third time I chance the Image Qual. Priority to 0. But I get still a very big difference in quality between the action an the no action scene. Has anybody an idée?

I get rude pictures
Could you explain this? I ahve no idea what you mean.

Don't make the Image Quality Priority 0. If anything you want to raise it some. You should read the CCE guide that is on the CCE homepage for information on what this does.

Could it be that the video is interlaced?

It's really hard to to figure out what your problem is. I think you might want to ask someone who understands English better to help you post. It might be a language problem that I can't figure out what your problem is and what you are asking.

Maybe I can it explain on this way.
A picture is made from many little pixels. Each pixels is an important element of the picture. In some of the scenes in the movie it likes that the pixels from the high speed scenes are bigger that the other pixels in the same picture, so in the movie is not a flowing (smooth; fluent?) motion.
The dvd2svd manual says: The Image Quality Priority indicates how many bits will be allocated to complex parts of the picture. It's a value between 0 and 100 and the smaller the value the more bits will be allocated to complex parts. If you think scenes with a low amount of action look bad you should increase this value.
When I translate it with a dictionary I mean that I must set the Image Quality Priority lower when I have a scene with much action. Because when I set the Image Quality Priority higher, it seems to get worse.

You are not the only one with that problem. You are talking about Mosquito noise, maybe even a mix of mosquito and DCT-blocks. You are not going to solve the problem with the Image quality Priority, just leave it between 16 – 20.
If there is a way I would say it will be by filtering.
Now – this is where the big problem is. I’ve been looking in the Avisynth the advanced DVD2SCD and many more, for over 2 weeks and must admit that I’m probably not among the brightest when it comes to finding out what type of filter to use. There are lots of filters out there. So fare I have come to the conclusion that one of these might be the right one to use : Blockbuster - UNfilter or NoMoSmooth. The only problem is – I can’t make them work because of a faulty syntax in my dvd2svcd.ini.

Markrb you are an expert in these matters, maybe you (or some one else?), could help us with your opinion regarding the right filter, or maby a combination, to use? Maby you would even be so helpful to give an example of the right entry in the dvd2svcd.ini for the Blockbuster and links to the latest *.dll files ?

Here an example on of my Avisynth entrie that DOSE NOT WORK for the Unfilter

[AVISYNTH_BicubicResize WITH UNFILTER]
0=LoadPlugin(!UNFILTER.dll)
1=UNFILTER(^x_value,^y_value)
2=BicubicResize(^TargetWidth,^TargetHeight,^b_value,^c_value)
3=AddBorders(0,^BorderTop,0,^BorderBottom)
^b_value=0.0
^c_value=0.6
!UNFILTER.dll=C:\Programmer\DVD2SVCD\unfilter\unfilter.dll
^x_value=
^y_value=

and please don’t tell us to look at the Sticky in the dvd2svcd advanced topics, this is where it came from.

Several months ago I spent days doing all kinds of tests on all kinds of filters and settings. At that time these new filters like Blur2 and Unfilter were not around.

I finally came to the conclusion that adding filters to a DVD encode was a waste of time or actually made the image worse in many cases. What I found was that by raising the Image Quality Priority to 22-24 it significantly reduced overall noise. The CCE manual even backs me up on this if you can read it right.

To qoute the CCE manual:
When the value is close to 0, the mosquito noise at the edges (noise causing hazy part along the edges, looking like flying mosquitoes) is less outstanding, but the contouring noise (noise which looks like contour line patterns, which appear in flat and wide areas, such as a dark background) is more outstanding. The opposite occurs when the value is closer to 100.
What many believe is mosquito noise is what CCE is actually calling contouring noise. So a balance must be made between each type of noise as there is no way to completely get rid of of it all. Personally I find that a setting of 22-24 is this correct balance.

Each person needs to find their balance, but I have found mine.

"...The only problem is – I can’t make them work because of a faulty syntax in my dvd2svcd.ini.."

What do u mean? You got an error message when is loaded to Tmpeg or CCE?
I don"t see any syntax errors to the script u posted...
Did u set the x,y values for the Unfilter in the Frameserving tab and change the path for the .dll ?
The latest version of Unfilter works only with Avisynth 2.5 alpha, use the old dll version as DVD2SVCD comes with avisynth 2.06 .

Hope that helps!

These are the filters I use when encoding.
[AVISYNTH_BICUBICRESIZE with TemporalSmoothing and unfilter and Fluxsmooth]
0=Loadplugin(!Mpeg2Dec.dll)
1=loadplugin(!Unfilter.dll)
2=loadplugin(!FluxSmooth.dll)
3=BicubicResize(^TargetWidth,^TargetHeight,^b_value,^c_value)
4=Temporalsmoother(^Strength,^Radius)
5=Unfilter(^x_value,^y_value)
6=FluxSmooth()
7=AddBorders(0,^BorderTop,0,^BorderBottom)
!Mpeg2Dec.dll=C:\Program Files\Dvd2svcd\Mpeg2dec\Mpeg2dec.dll
!Unfilter.dll=C:\Program Files\DVD2svcd\Unfilter.dll
!FluxSmooth.dll=C:\Program Files\Dvd2svcd\Fluxsmooth.dll
^b_value=0.33
^c_value=0.33
^Strength=2
^Radius=1
^x_value=-40
^y_value=-40
Obviously you will have to change the paths since you dll's maybe in different places.
Also make sure you are using the right version of the filters they keep changing regularly.And more confusingly there is now two avisynth programs which require different versions of the same filter.
I use an IQP 10, Q.F 25, Bias 10. For most encodes I use Roba multi pass 2 times. For the odd encode that dosen't like this method i use CCe multipass by 4. (Just a little note. When i first tried roba method i kept getting CCe error message.So i installed the the Athlon patch which cured the error messages)
Max bitrate 2530, min 300 and max average 2500.
I am not saying this is perfect but i do about 4 encodes a week from dvd source with about 90% success rate.( By this i mean i do not have to alter any of the settings mentioned)
The avisynth script was copied straight from my dvd2svcd.ini file which i have used for the past 6 or 7 encodes.
The reason why i use roba method is it is quicker and I can normally get 2hrs of movie on 2 cd's.
I have tried different IQP values and never really noticed much difference so using the defaults will probably be ok.
The speed of encoding on my machine is 0.81. This will change if you change the order of the filters which i have messed about with and found no gain in percieved quality but a slow down in speed.
Also i have not noticed any great reduction in file size with changing the order of the filters.
Another thing i must mention is that my svcd's are viewed on a normal 4:3 tv from about 4 ft away (1.5 metres)
I have also viewed them on a number of different widescreen tv's
and to my eyes they seem ok and to the other people watching.
I am not trying to say i have that i am totally happy with my encodes
but they are gradually getting better and better and with the help of great programs like dvd2svcd and all the avisynth filters it will be only a matter of time.

Mark I remember reading your posts and trying the settings and filters you had tried and ending up with appalling results. I too came to the conclusion at the time that filters were a waste of time.
But since trying unfilter and fluxsmooth i have changed my mind and wish to thank the people involved.I wish i had the skill to design my own perfect filter.
Thanks Keep up the good work

Thanks a lot VILLA21, when I switched to the ”old” version every thing just went fine (trying the UnFilter for the first time right now).
Now I’m getting real antusiastick, so right now I’m trying to make the Msharp filter working but keeps getting this error in Avisynth “unexpected character “^”” in the preview vindow.

Her is my ini file:

[AVISYNTH_MSharpen]
0=LoadPlugin(!MSharpen.dll)
1=MSharpen(threshold=^MSharpen_Threshold,strength=^MSharpen_Strength)
2=BicubicResize(^TargetWidth,^TargetHeight,^b_value,^c_value)
3=AddBorders(0,^TopBorder,0,^BottomBorder)
!MSharpen.dll=C:\Programmer\DVD2SVCD\MSharpen\MSharpen.dll
^MSharpen_Threshold=10
^MSharpen_Strength=50
^b_value=0.0
^c_value=0.6

What am I doing wrong?

markrb
4th December 2002, 23:32
I am no expert on Avisynth and these new scripts for DVD2SVCD, but I had a similar problem that I solved by doing the following:
[AVISYNTH_MSharpen]
0=LoadPlugin(!MSharpen.dll)
1=MSharpen(threshold=^MSharpen_Threshold,strength=^MSharpen_Strength)
2=BicubicResize(^TargetWidth,^TargetHeight,^b_value,^c_value)
3=AddBorders(0,^TopBorder,0,^BottomBorder)
!MSharpen.dll=C:\Programmer\DVD2SVCD\MSharpen\MSharpen.dll
^MSharpen_Threshold=10
^MSharpen_Strength=50
^b_value=0.0
^c_value=0.6

[AVISYNTH_MSharpen]
0=LoadPlugin(!MSharpen.dll)
1=MSharpen(^Threshold,^Strength)
2=BicubicResize(^TargetWidth,^TargetHeight,^b_value,^c_value)
3=AddBorders(0,^TopBorder,0,^BottomBorder)
!MSharpen.dll=C:\Programmer\DVD2SVCD\MSharpen\MSharpen.dll
^Threshold=Threshold=10
^Strength=Strength=50
^b_value=0.0
^c_value=0.6

I have no idea if this will help, but it was the only way I could get the Tweak filter to work.
If this doesn't work the error should tell you what line it was having problems with. This will help us.

From my experience using TMPGenc in general causes jerky motion, but it is otherwise fine

I use CCE 2.5 and works fine, using the default priority of 17

you shouldn't notice anything wrong with the movie, except some noise in dark areas. Just don't try to put more than one hour or try to keep the average video bitrate about 1600 or more

markrb
5th December 2002, 05:10
Well I had no problem making it work with that stuff you posted.
Make sure that your path to the MSharpen.dll is correct and you do realize you have to add it right? It's not there as default.
You may also want to check the syntax of the addborder command against the others in the ini. I changed it to be the same as the others in my ini. You have them as Topborder and Bottomborder when it should be BorderTop and BorderBottom.

One last filter. Could some one please help with a “copy and past” DVD2SVCD.ini for the BlockBuster filter? (This is an Avisynth filter for eliminating DCT blocks). I just don’t quit get the syntax:

Blockbuster([clip], method="...", shared parameters, method-specific parameters)
The method parameter can be either "noise", "sharpen", "blur" or "show".
