Would it be possible to add a spell checker to the 'preview post' button? I imagine it would help quite a lot of people to get spelling right in their posts. It shouldn't actually correct anything, but rather just underline unknown words in the preview pane.

if i write a big post and am worried about spelling i copy my post into an e mail message and spell check it there and paste it back if i screwed up a few words.

I would love a spell checker, but I think the forum is pretty tight on CPU cycles and that would just add to it.

i agree it would also help the non-english speakers to write posts/reply’s.
So maybe just a post to a spell checker web site? ...it's kinda the next best thing.
i normally open word , but it would be good if i didnt have to! maybe a link to a GPL "office like" program i saw a post on here not long ago...is this kinda getting off topic?

A spell checker would be cool. For instance I always use those lame keyboard at my university and they suck!!! I get a lot of typing errors.... But the main pb could come from either of two things:
-CPU:doing a search on a whole ispell dictionary for every single word of a post even in a mysql db is slow!!
-Coding: Doom9's forum runs on vbulletin and there code is non free. It is probably hell to modify because not properly documented , Doom9 cannot distribute the source code for someone else to modify and he definitly has no time for this ,he might not even be allowed to modify it!!!

Absolutely not. I never spell anything vrong.
Looks like a spell checker could have been useful here :)
I feel it's not really worth the effort. I can live with the odd spelling mistake.

For people who don't like spending loads of money for a spellchecker (i.e microsoft word)
http://www.openoffice.org is a good alternative and its free :D (works on mac/linux/windows)

Well if you want free alternatives fo spell-checking go for ispell or aspell.
As for M$ office try star-office it's good but not gpl.
I peersonally like LaTeX much better.

ieSpell (http://www.iespell.com/) is a nice free spell checker that works right in Internet Explorer  I use when posting all the time.

There is a huge vB modification scene with lots of hacks for just about anything. It wouldn't surprise me if there's several spellcheckers around.

UBB used to have a builtin one that leeched off some spellchecking site, but it closed down.
