View Full Version : ripping of lord of the rings extended version 4 DVD CDs

(I'm using the latest version of DVD2SVCD from the date this was posted and CCE SP 2.50 with the fix for problems)
Ok, this is my first post but try to take me seriously since I have actually been looking for the answers of my questions.
I'm trying to rip all FOUR cd's of the extended lord of the rings DVD.
Now, I find it's more than too easy to rip the first 2 cd's with the actual movie on.
However, is it possible ( I know there have been some discussions about this... but it's a little unclear) to rip the actual title page and maybe even what I would call the 'links' to start playing the ripped dvd etc from certain scenes by clicking like a normal dvd on these 'links'. I can see it's not possible in dvd2svcd yet... will it be?
Now, to something of more value for me. DVD CD 3 and 4. These contain the making of the lotr , from "book to vision" and from "vision to reality".
When I try to rip this it tries to rip only the longest movie section which is about 40 min when the actual cd's contain a lot more in total but it's all in sections...
Is there anyway of making it rip the entire cd's and then just make 2 or 3 .bin files? I mean would it really be that hard? once you play this 'imaginary' cd it could just play them like one movie no?
I would really like to rip this part of my DVD.
Thanks a lot for any help,
Zedar

You'll notice this kind of problem with almost every DVD special (e.g. making of etc.). I guess this is related to the video material being split over several VOB files. I remember having ripped one of the Terry Pratchett Discworld Animes, where every chapter had been put into a new VOB file - it was impossible to feed this material into DVD2SVCD, but I somehow managed to succeed by merging all VOBs together in one VOB, which I then fed into DVD2SVCD successfully.
Honestly, I am not sure which method I applied for merging the VOBs - I think I used IfoEdit for this purpose. Take a look at the download section, you'll find it there. Just rip all VOBs from the 3rd and 4th disc, merge them and start converting.

Just do a search, ripping of 'specials' and 'making of' was dicussed before.

All sounds very good, however I've followed up on the advices and I still have one or two questions:
First of all, I'm very interested in the idea of merging the vob files.
Now, the problem is that I tried doing this but to no satisfaction and the guides don't really talk about mergin vob files, one even says "DO NOT tick merge files" now I'm confused...
What I've done so far is the following:
I ripped all parts of the DVD seperatly into a lot of .vob .ifo etc... files.
Then I managed to create one big vob file using "filemerger"
Now comes the problem how do I get the ifo file etc...? to be able to put it into dvd2svcd?
anyone have or know where to find some kind of guide on MERGING in ifoedit or similar... (find the guides alright but not the merging part...)
Thanks for any extra help,
Zedar

Read the Q+A you are not even close. There is no need to "merge" the VOB files and in fact you do not want to to do this. Trust me the answer is in there.
There is a good chance because of an issue with DVD2AVI that it is not going to work, but it is worth trying. It does work from time to time.
The only method that is known to work more often then not is to convert each seperately then burn the BBmpep_file??.mpg files using Nero's SVCD template.

Zedar:
I've been doing some work with multiple volumes containing several program chains and getting my tail kicked for two weeks now. My biggest problem was not identifying what I was dealing with, and then not searching effectively. As pointed out by Labersack, we're not going to get a blow by blow answer to these questions here, as there is a ton of documentation already on file in the forum concerning these topics. I haven't touched Frodo yet, but check out "Band of Brothers" and see if there is anything there for you. If I've given you a bum steer, I'm pretty sure someone will tune this up. It ain't light yet, but the sun will be up soon.
Good luck.......ammck55

I'm also ripping the Appendices discs. I had the same problems as you, but using DVDDecrypter I was able to extract each PGC of the discs to separate vobs. The problem with this method is that it's a lot of work. You need to manually rip all PGCs and you also need to manually set up encoding of each of the vobs (which is a lot, 10+ per disc) in DVD2SVCD.
The reward, however is each documentary and clip in separate mpgs, which u can either store on a large archive server (like me), or burn as SVCD discs with multiple tracks using Nero.

Xorcist please read the forum before posting. If you did you would know that DVDdecrypter is NOT recomended for use with DVD2SVCD. In fact it has such issues that we will not even help with questions on it. The two included rippers are the only supported rippers and as a last resort SmartRipper is suggested, but again only as a last resort.
Whether or not it works for you does not change the fact that outside rippers are known to cause major issues.

Oh, ok. Sorry, I don't frequent these forums often, and have never had problems with DVDDecrypt and DVD2SVCD. I didn't reply with my "solution" just to be a badass and make problems for guys..

Thanks a lot for all the replies. At the moment I'm going with the comment by Mark. Tried all the other things but this seems to be the best solution (even though I yet can't see how it's going to work)
Now I have a question relating to some information I found trying to do what Mark told me to do.
Here is the info I've been following in Q+A:
Q41: HOWTO combine/encode 2 disc DVD set as one movie. 1.08.1 or above only.
A:
Alternate method
1. Get SmartRipper from Doom9.org
2. Rip disc one into a temp1 directory.
3. Rip disc 2 into temp2 directory
4. Find the highest number VOB file in temp1 (ex.. VTS_01_6.VOB)
5. Rename all VOB files in temp2 1 number higher then highest in temp1. If your last Vob in temp 1 is named VTS_01_4.vob make sure the first vob from temp 2 is renamed to VTS_01_5.vob and the rest up one number from that.
6. Move all VOB's from temp2 into temp1.
7. erase temp2.
Now what I did was enter smartripper selected rip files and selected all the vob files greater than 1,000K (these are the ones I want)
I rip them and of course that works fine. So I now have all the vob files named nicely after each other in the same folder.
However the answer now tells me to:
8. Start DVD2SVCD and make sure DVD ripping is checked.
9. Select IFO file from temp1
10. Make sure output directory is NOT temp1
11. Procede as normal remembering time listed is NOT correct, but this will not make a difference to DVD2SVCD.
IFO? First of all that didn't come out in the rip, and secondly even if I picked all the IFO files too which one should I pick?
I mean it sounds really good if it still works even if the time is incorrect, this is what I was worried about from the beginning. However if someone could tell me where I'm going wrong or what I should do to end up with the IFO file that you are supposed to select in DVD2SVCD it would be fantastic.
NB. Rember however that I'm trying to rip CD3 and 4, the making of lord of the rings. Now that it's lord of the rings is irrelevant. The important thing is that the whole DVD is divided into section with a lot of vob files so if you pick "MOVIE" in smartripper it will only select the biggest vob files which is only about 40min out of the whole 5hours of stuff that is on the DVD.
Thanks again for any help on the matter, almost there now..

Just use the IFO from the any VOB-set. It must have the same name as the first VOB. I always use the one from the first set, so I don't have to rename it. If you don't have any IFO, you should select it also in smartripper (I even think you can just copy it with explorer, but never tried it.)
btw: This way only works if all VOB-sets have the same AspectRatio, frames per second, languages etc. Otherwise strange effects may happen (wrong aspect ratio, missing or foreign sound...)
Don't worry about the wrong time shown in DVD2SVCD when beginning the conversion, it will get the correct length of the movie later.

I'm sorry I'm really slow... or stupid... must be one of them or both...
I've realised thanks to the reply above that I have to have the IFO file of the first vob file. So I ripped that and open DVD2SVCD added the ifo file to the ripping and all the vob files to that.
Now if I do a test to see if it will rip and convert them by pressing "rip only" it does the following:
WNASPI32.DLL 4.6.0.1021

--------------------
Now, why is it that it only rips one of the vob files and not all of them? I even tried converting it too and I get only a nice movie of the first 30 seconds of the DVD (blue copyright screen stuff)
So what could I be doing wrong now...?
My steps in details:
1. I open smartripper
2. I select all the vob files and the ifo file that go with it
(eg. VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB) (goes on the same way up till VTS_13_0.IFO and VTS_13_1.VOB)
(notice that the ifo has a zero and the vob a 1 that's normal yes?)
3. I rip them into a folder
4. I open DVD2SVCD
5. In the conversion tab I click the folder button and select the first ifo (VTS_01_0.IFO) file.
6. I then click the "..." button and add all the other vob files.
7. now it should be just as a normal rip yes? shou ld just click rip and convert no?
Do tell me if I'm completely stupid as I'm starting to think...
(can't understand why I can't figure it out... ripping normal dvd's is the easiest thing on earth...)
Thanks,
Zedar

Nobody seems to want to read the Q+A? All the answers you need are there and you shouldn't need to use SmartRipper at all. All you should need is DVD2SVCD.
Simply make sure you are using Internal routines.
Check DVDripping.
Load the IFO and click on the time dropdown.
A popup with come up. On the top of it is track length.
Select the first one that you want.
Rip it using rip only.
Select the next time length on the dropdown.
Rip it to a different directory.
After you have ripped all the times you want to different directories find the highest number of the VOB's in the first place you ripped to.
Go to the second directory and rename the Vob files there exactly the same but, one number higher then the highest numbered Vob in the first directory.
Copy them to the first ripped place.
Continue doing this for each of the directories ripped.
Uncheck ripping.
Select the IFO off the HD from the first directory
The time shown will be wrong, but that doesn't matter.
It should convert everything as one encode.
There are issues with the above method. DVD2AVI has a bug that can make things like this out of Sync after the first ripped video. It does this even if you rip with another ripper.
You will not get DVD chapters after the first ripped section. Use fixed chapters instead. Subtitles will not work.

Thanks a lot Mark.
I'm sorry I didn't understand it from the beginning but I DID try and read the Q+A. However the Q+A doesn't specify greatly enough the small details like you did now.
Thanks again. This thread should be terminated :p (my dvd is still ripping, which is a good sign.
Thanks,
