View Full Version : Vertical Lines on MPG files

Used DVD2SVCD for the first time at the weekend, and I was blown away with the quality of the finished SVCDs, and everything worked - subtitles, chapters, change disk pic etc.
The only prob is tearing on the screen during action sequences, just like playing Direct3D or OpenGL games with vertical sync off. I was not sure if this is normal or not.
Having played the TMPENG .MPV2 file through media player, the tearing is not present, but it is there on the BBMPEG files, so at least I have narrowed it down a bit..
I used an older PC - AMD 1Ghz, 512ram, Geforce2MX, WINME - the process took 26hours! Is this normal?
Any help would be appreciated.

If your source really is Interlaced, I suggest you either use "SeperateFields/SelectEvery" or "Keep Interlaced" as your deinterlacer. If your going to watch the SVCD on your TV use the latter option, if not use the former, but only if the source is interlaced.

OK thanks I will try that - I had used Telecine - following the guide at http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/articles/dvd2svcd.html , as it said this gave the best results. I am viewing the SVCD's on a TV.
All PAL DVD's are interlaced, are'nt they?

No, in Europe most DVD's are progressive (or looks progressive) however it's the opposite in Australia afaik. If you in the preview doesn't see vertical lines of any kind don't use any deinterlacers.

OK, the film is interlaced according to WinDVD4 info. (SWEPIIAOTC)
Reading a lot of the threads about deinterlacing, it seems there are some very different opinions. The view which seems to make sense to me is that DVD's should never be deinterlaced, as they wil display best on a TV and if playing on a PC you can use forcebob or forceweave to deinterlace 'on the fly' - what do you think of that?
Also can you please explain the difference between 'keep interlaced' and 'no deinterlacing' in DVD2SVCD? Are they the same thing as they sound pretty similar?
TIA

"No Deinterlace" is for Progressive Material (e.g. not interlaced)
"Keep Interlaced" is for interlaced material when you want to watch the movie on the TV. There's some specific settings needed for keeping interlaced. A better answer is in the Q&A somewhere where it's also described how to "Keep Interlaced" manually and still maintain the correct aspect ratio ;)
