I am considering a DVD Burner for DATA ONLY. I do not care about compatibility in standalone DVD Video players. All I want is a good back-up for large amount of data, mostly divx files. It looks like DVD-R's can be bought for a cheaper price-per-gig than CD-R's, plus fewer disc's to store, so I'm close to purchasing one for this only. Since I have my computer output to my tv and stereo, I can already watch divx in complete satisfaction, and in fact only have a DVD-ROM, not a standalone, thus I have no need for DVD-Video, only DVD-ROM.
So, my question is, how does this change the discussion? There appears to be quite a bit of problems with burners, software, technique, and ESPECIALLY with media, when it comes to burning compatible DVD-Videos. But, is this all a mute point with DVD-ROM? Is this like the early days of CD-R's when CD Data was fine, but CD Audio was spotty? Can I just about any burner and media (read: cheapest). Has anyone had any problem burning data dvd's, or reading data dvd's on their dvd-rom player?
