How would i go about taking audio that has been recorded with a dvcamera or something. Then mix it to 6 speaker ac3. What program would i use? Not cool edit or something right? Can Adobe Aftereffects do it?
well, thankyou!

There is a lot a lot of DVDs having stereo or even mono sound.
You have a stereo source, you make a 2.0 AC3 or stereo MP2, period.
Tell him that it is just not possible, unless he can give you a real 5.1 source.
If professionals don't do it, why would you? ;)

But the professionals (in Holywood) make these DD/DTS soundtracks, don't they? They must be using some simple samples too I guess for some sound effects. What tools do they have at hand?

Making a fresh 5.1 track, and remastering a 2.0 track to 5.1 are 2 completely different things!
Remastering a mono or stereo track to 5.1 is very hard und takes a lot of time! that's why I said, if professionals don't do it, why would you. Because there is a few DVDs having remastered 5.1 tracks out of stereo or mono tracks.

Hehe actually you could use something like cooledit pro ,its not much different than multitracking really except at the end i gets encoded into ac3 ,of course something like Nuendo is probably far more suitable.
