PAL interlaced movies

Hi all

Quick question for you.

Before encoding my movies with TMPGenc i use bitrateviewer. This prog returns loads of helpful stuff. My question is that on a few PAL movies it says that it is interlaced.

Should i set TMPGenc source video to interlaced? I notice that there are 2 dropdowns to select interlaced. I have just been setting both to progressive regardless.

I'm in region 4 and BV (and DVD2AVI) report quite a few DVDs as interlaced. I've just encoded them as progressive (with CCE) and they've turned out fine.

My understanding is that to check for interlacing you should use the slider in DVD2AVI and if you find any combing artifacts then it's interlaced, otherwise it isn't.

I wasn't sure really, i thought i could see lines in the film but i might have been too close to my telly! :D

I get no artifacts or playing errors so it must be cool

I know what you mean, in a cople of cases I almost imagined a few differences between the original DVD and the copy. Was looking pretty hard for some artifacts =)

with PAL titles, even the progressive titles can be labeled as interlaced in the mpeg2 stream, so looking at the footage is the only way to make sure.
